I remember going to a convention in Chicago a few years ago where I had to rent a car and drive on their freeway/interstate system to get around town. The first thing that bothered me is the fleecing that occurred on the Interstate roads, the ones initially funded and maintained by federal tax dollars, yet the state of Illinois was charging tolls on them. Now, I could forgive it, largely because I don't live there and it was only a temporary thing, if it weren't for the yard-wide craters right in the middle of the road that i had to swerve to avoid at 70 MPH or risk destroying my rental car. Clearly, the tolls weren't being collected on behalf of regular maintenance.
Now, I'm not an anti-taxer. Far from it. However, it's just been my experience that the more a government takes, the less it seems to give back.
BTW, my local Sam's Club in central Florida is around $3.35 for 93 the last time i checked.
