Reading Bob Lutz's book Car Guys vs. Bean Counters you will quickly find out there is no excuse for bad panel gaps. There are only two reasons it happens, management is not giving assembly workers the order to meet tighter tolerances, or its the assembly line workers not caring. But it doesn't take long for the panel gaps to be adjusted in assembly. It comes down to a lack of caring in the culture of the company.
