The prime advantage of a V6 is that it is much more compact than an I6 (essentially half the length). The length of an inline 6 pretty much restricts it to front engine/rear drive configurations whereas a V6 will fit in nearly any engine bay. So why would anyone want to use an I6? Balance. It has 1st and 2nd order balance. Its too late right now for me to explain why this is good, maybe someone else will. If not, I'll add more tomorrow.
