I would rent a V6 first if possible.
For my situation, a V6 is fine. Everyone is different though. Its probably the best 6 I've ever driven, but it still doesn't throw you back into the seat like a V8 and most likely never will. It does however, get to 90 pretty damn quick and feels effortless while doing so. So effortless in fact I didn't even realize how fast I was going coming off the entrance to the highway when I first rented the 1lt I got from Avis.
Rent it, beat on it for a day, and then make up your mind. Even quick buys don't have to be impulses as long as you put a little thought into it.
