As a brand-new shooter, at least consider having a lot of your early shooting with something in .22LR. Not teaching yourself to flinch in anticipation of the recoil will help you become a better shooter. You can always get something in a heavier caliber later.
A nickel a round will encourage you to practice more than when it's a quarter or more every time it goes 'bang'. Plus, the initial investment is lower and you might get a better feel for what fits you.
FWIW, I'm pretty new to gun ownership myself. But I've shot from time to time ever since I was about 12.
