I’ve got the transmission (6L50e) out of my car. Should I be able to start/run the engine without it? Will the ECM keep me from starting/running the engine?

I check my oil level via the dipstick at least every other gas fill up. If I were ever even a 1/4 quart down I’d be looking for the problem.
