one reason for the pricing by GM (esp for lower miles and years coverage) might be that GM knows they already cover power-train to 5/60K, so what they are covering as a company is somewhat duplicated...

I just got a quote of $1100 for 6yr/75k (additional miles) and my OEM warranty expires in 6 months. Insane if you ask me.
