I guess my point is I never really have to touch the "buttons". My AC is set to auto and I use steering wheel controls for audio. Only time I touch the console is to turn on the cooled seats.

Never had the need to shift from 6th to 2nd however when down shifting more than one gear I always try to hit each gear. So 5th to 4th to 3rd etc.
