I do not think it was hydrolocked. It appears that something got in there. The small round marks on the piston and head were most likely made by a foreign object.

I think they may be upside down, tough to tell by the picture but with the way they are there may be interference between the link and mounting tab, if it was reversed there would be more clearance.
