BCD Copper Free 1LE Caliper Part #s
 

In another thread I was asked for the BCD Copper Free Brake System caliper part #s.


I have a 2022 SS 1LE (RPO A1Y) with the BCD Copper Free Brake Package. My build calls out RPOs BCD and J6H for the brake system. A 2022 and up ZL1 1LE (RPO A1Z) with the same BCD package will have the same rotors, brake hoses, pads and calipers. The ABS tune most likely is different because of the different tires and suspension. Both cars are a 1LE which will call out the red calipers and 1LE script.


My calipers had the following stickers on them from the factory. I believe that the stickers found on our Brembos, which have an 8 digit # on them, do not always correspond to the actual part # used by GM. Here are the #'s from the stickers on my calipers:

My GM parts source does not accept these #s.

Here is a VIN from another BCD equipped SS 1LE that matches my own car specs,

You can use this VIN whenever a dealer asks for a VIN to confirm SS 1LE BCD part compatibility.
The front caliper part #s I have found from my parts source:

Now for the rears.
I have found inconsistencies. Bear with me as I want to cover all the bases. As I said use a VIN from a known BCD equipped 1LE to confirm for yourself. Part #s sometimes change over time.
It is possible there was a part # change and I am behind on my part #s and/or Rockauto is. But according to my part source, the following #s are NOT for the 1LEs.
RockAuto has these #s for the rears and they show a pic of the LR in red, but no pic of the RR.

RockAuto's description:
"SS Model; Exc. Chevrolet LT Performance Package (A1X), Chevrolet SS Performance Package (A1Y); Copper Free Brake Identification (BCD), Heavy Duty Front & Rear Disc Brakes w/ ABS (J6H)"
Notice that it says Exc. (Except) Chevrolet LT Performance Package (A1X), Chevrolet SS Performance Package (A1Y);.
I believe they are calling out an exception for both the A1X and A1Y RPO code.

My part source calls them out as:

"DISC BRAKE CALIPER,REAR // CALIPER,REAR BRAKE (WITHOUT BRAKE PADS & BRACKET) -
SS, Convertible * COPPER FREE BRAKE IDENTIFICATION(BCD), HEAVY DUTY FRONT & REAR DISC BRAKES W/ABS(J6H) * EXCEPT CHEVROLET LT PERFORMANCE PACKAGE(A1X), CHEVROLET SS PERFORMANCE PACKAGE(A1Y)
SS, Coupe * COPPER FREE BRAKE IDENTIFICATION(BCD), HEAVY DUTY FRONT & REAR DISC BRAKES W/ABS(J6H) * EXCEPT CHEVROLET LT PERFORMANCE PACKAGE(A1X), CHEVROLET SS PERFORMANCE PACKAGE(A1Y)"

This description is saying the exception is for A1X and A1Y. We know that A1X is the V6 1LE which I believe went away in 2022.
And we know the 1LE option is not available on convertibles.

So I am doubting that the below #s are correct for BCD equipped SS 1LE or ZL1 1LE . I believe they are black painted and Rockauto is incorrect.

Moving deeper, my parts source calls out the below #s for any BCD equipped 1LE:

"CALIPER,REAR BRAKE (WITHOUT BRAKE PADS & BRACKET) - // DISC BRAKE CALIPER,REAR
AJ, AK37 CHEVROLET SS PERFORMANCE PACKAGE(A1Y), COPPER FREE BRAKE IDENTIFICATION(BCD), HEAVY DUTY FRONT & REAR DISC BRAKES W/ABS(J6H)"


This description hits all the correct RPOS, A1Y, BCD and J6H.

BUT, I found another inconsistency. AC Delco's site lists the 85113991/85113992 part #s as:

"CHEVROLET SS Perf Pkg(A1Y), COPPER FREE BRAKE IDENTIFICATION(BCD), HD FRONT & REAR DISC BRAKES W/ABS(J6H)"


The description is correct for a 1LE but they show a BLACK caliper for both the LR and RR.:bonk:

So to summarize, a BCD equipped 1LE would have the following caliper part #s. One thing I have found in many years of part # and general info research is that even GM can be delayed or get the small detail info wrong. Always confirm with your GM parts source. Part #s change over time also.

I called my parts buddy at my local GM dealership and he confirmed the BCD 1LE fronts and rears for my VIN as:

The BCD front calipers are the same size caliper that is on the typical Ferodo HP1000 brake package that is (still) available on the Gen6 ZL1 and ZL1 1LE.

The BCD front caliper is also be the same size as the front caliper on the GM carbon ceramic matrix (CCM) brakes.C7 ZO6/GS, C6 ZR1, Gen5 Z/28 for example.

The rear BCD calipers are the same size caliper that comes on all Gen6 ZL1s. The rotor is the same size also but note there is a part # change for the BCD rotors. It could be something simple like a coating change or something to lessen NHV. Also, this is the same rear caliper shape as the Gen5 SS and ZL1. I do not know if the mounting bolt thread pattern and offset and brake hose mounting are the same. If so, purchasing a Gen5 SS 1LE rear caliper set could be a less expensive option to non-ZL1 Gen6 owners looking to upgrade to the BCD components.

Be aware that there could be other minor changes to BCD components that while they look similar to other non-BCD parts, those subtle changes could change the feel and overall performance of the entire system. It could be machining changes, coatings and corrosive protection changes, or NHV mitigation changes. Also ABS cal differences. Sometimes the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

The PN's seen on the stickers on new builds are for complete assemblies (caliper, pads, spring clips, pins, cross bolts). The rear BCD J6H caliper PN's (without the pads, etc.) are the same as regular ZL1 1LE J6H ones.

The front BCD J6H for A1Y (SS 1LE) or A1Z (ZL1 1LE) red caliper PN's you would order from a dealer, without the pads, etc., are 86791548 LF / '49 RF.

The assembly plant or a sub-assembly VAA (Value Added Assembler) uses "loaded" calipers during the vehicle build process. Hope this helps further explain.

Not trying to jack the thread, but I figured it might be a good place to ask about replacement pads for the BCD 1LE brakes. I've looked in other parts of the forum but haven't been able to get a straight answer. I'm looking to replace brake pads all the way around soon and didn't know which direction I should go.

1. Has anyone tried non-BCD pads on the stock BCD rotor? Any issues and/or performance increases/decreases?
2. If the switch to non-BCD pads is worth it, what are the part numbers for the pads? Are they the same as the ZL1 non-BCD pads?
3. If I should stay with the BCD pads, what are the part numbers for the SS 1LE BCD pads?

I've searched through the forums multiple times but haven't really been able to find a straight answer on any of these questions. I appreciate anyone's help here!

When the SS 1LE gets the BCD brake system, it is getting a different rear caliper mounting bolt than what an SS 1LE would have with the typical HP1000 copper brake system. This is the same bolt used on ALL ZL1s whether they are copper or the BCD copper free.

Fantastic info. Knowing that the front caliper is the same size as the carbon ceramic packages is interesting… I wonder about the possibility of slapping Z/28 brakes on the front.

Front BCD J6H caliper is same size (but solid not vented pistons) as the CT5-V Blackwing’s optional 400x38mm CCB rotors. The regular J6H front caliper is the same caliper body as the Z28 for its 394x36mm CCM rotors.

I had went down this same path of thinking... Honestly, the most cost effective solution, is doing an SS 1LE w/out the BCD brake option... and upgrading to ZL1 Calipers/Rotors.

I was considering ordering my new SS 1LE with the BCD option, with hopes of then using the CT5V Blackwing Carbon Ceramic Discs. Only to learn the Cadillac Rotors (Iron and Ceramic) are different than the BCD Camaro Rotors.

So if you are planning on going Iron Brakes, just grab a set for $2K off Ebay... all day for Calipers/Rotors & Brake Lines... and you'll have more brake then you know what to do with.

And if you want to spend another $2K... purchase the C6 ZR1 Carbon Ceramic Rotors, and bolt on the front of your ZL1 Rotor/Hats... and you've got the best of all worlds (IMO).

Soon to be on my car, I've already upgraded to the ZLE Calipers, with GiroDisc Rotors... and will be replacing the fronts, with Said ZR1 Carbon Ceramic's after this weekend's event.

Dave / SCCAForums, you’ll find out the ZL1 hats don’t drop right onto the CCM rotors (Z28, C6/C7 J57). I have ran them on one of Gen6 1LE’s for over four years. Make sure you have PN 19207043 or Racing Brake vented pistons in your J6H front caliper or you’ll toast your dust seals real quick. Also, you need CCM pads not the CT5-V Blackwing CCB pads for those CCM rotors. I’ve run C6 J57, C7 J57 (both regular & ZR1), and Z28. They all are fine but the C7 ZR1 versions last a bit longer. All similar pedal feel and bite. Good luck on your car & events this year. Dave / RUQWIKR
