Cost to replace chassis wiring harness/burned from header ::solved::

Anyone have any guesses what labor would be?

I need to get my harness repaired or replaced. Thinking repairing it would be much much less. I have like 10-12 wires that need to be replaced that I can see so far. Got burned by my long tubes.

Need a trust worthy place to repair I think.

I had the wiring harness replaced on mine. If I remember correctly the harness cost about 550 dollars and 8 hours labor or so to replace it so roughly 1500 dollars all in. I did this because the GM dealer in their infinite wisdom decided to repair the harness when they replaced my engine under warranty. That REPAIRED harness lasted about a year before I started having intermittent problems which all went away when the harness was replaced entirely. When it the original engine it burned some of the wires on the engine harness and THOSE were the ones that the dealer repaired. ALL of these wires on the FACTORY harness are color coded but the replacement wirring that is used to REPAIR the harness IS NOT color coded.

To do the job correctly you have to pull the front bumper off to replace the entire harness because the ambient air temperature sensor that controls your AC/HEATING system is inaccessible otherwise.

There are literally hundreds of wires in that harness all color coded.

Thanks for your input man I was thinking roughly the same 1k-1500 and 7-8 hours labor.

Would you let an independent shop do it or just dealer?

I can’t imagine repairing every wire in that damaged harness. There are so many of them and I’m sure some are damaged where I can’t see in that loom. Some are melted together some are completely frayed and separated already and it’s probably a good 10-15 words I can see that need repair. Don’t want to spend time repairing when like you said a year later it starts acting up.

You wouldn’t happen to have a walk through some where of this replacement or know where to look for this? I found a harness on eBay from a zl1 for 200-300$ depending on seller. Pictures of wiring harnesses are one of my most feared things in life but I may try to overcome my fears.

Well I am fortunate in that down here in Texas I used AMP www.advancedmodernperformance.com. In general though you would probably be better off using a dealer. Yeah just looking at the harness it can be intimidating. What you also have to look for is that the connectors that the harness wires are plugging into (typically sensors) are still in good condition and undamaged as well. I know in my case that had to replace a couple of the sensors that got heat damaged as well.

Our old friend YOUTUBE no doubt probably has some sort of installation video on the harness I would bet.

I will ask around at some shops locally and the guy who built my Camaro but he’s about an hour and a half away.

Hopefully no sensors got taken out but I bet a few did. A lot of that harness is melted together. I’ll check around you tube or a wiring schematic from Chevy for this harness.

Yikes... How did that happen?

It was the chassis harness correct not an engine harness?

The bitch is going to be labor. I am sure you need to be under the car too which is going to be tough.

Ah, you plan to do it yourself hey? Cool if you are able too. Me personally, that would have been something I'd let the GM Dealer do. Just seems like there would be a lot more to it then simply replacing the harness. Resetting codes, etc.. not sure... not something I've ever attempted and with all the electronics in these cars today... I know here by me, the dealer wouldn't do it if I brought the harness to them. They will not install parts you do not buy from them. I wouldn't trust an Indy. Not for that anyway. Just me...

Sounds like you will also need to do something to the new harness to keep it from happening again I'd assume? When you said header, I am assuming you put in an aftermarket header, which is what caused the problem to begin with?

Yea a simple zip tie to the frame would have prevented this whole thing.
