Tail of the Dragon after CamaroFest VII

A number of folks have expressed interest in hitting up the Tail of the Dragon after CamaroFest. If others would be interested we could drive down there together Sunday after the cruise.

**EDIT** Still awaiting final details about Sunday's cruise, so for now we'll make plans to leave after Sunday's cruise and festivities are complete.

Itinerary for CamaroVan to the Tail of the Dragon, post-CamaroFest VII:

- Sunday, after the cruise is finished: Drive to the Dragon Pitt Inn & BBQ in Maryville, TN
  • This is approx. a 4-hour drive (using interstates) from the host hotel in Bowling Green to Dragon Pitt Inn & BBQ, not including stops for bathroom breaks
  • $80/night
  • Close proximity to Tail of the Dragon
- Sunday evening: Free time / check in at Inn

- Monday 10am-12pm: 11-mile Tail of the Dragon main course, with Killboy photography opportunities
  • If others do not stay at Dragon Pitt Inn & BBQ, please make plans to meet us at the Inn by 10am
  • Leaving the Inn will take us on Tail of the Dragon from TN to NC, ending at gift shop/food options
  • There is ample time for 3 runs - coming down from the Inn into Deals Gap, running the course the other way, and a third trek back down to Deals Gap for lunch. This gives plenty of opportunities to enjoy the Dragon as well as get many photos from Killboy.
- Monday 12pm-2pm: Shopping and Lunch options- Monday 2pm-6pm: Moonshiner 28 to Dillard, GA
  • This is approx. a 2 to 2 1/2 hour drive (without stops) but might stop a few times for restroom and scenery/photography
  • 55 MPH speed limit on majority of road
  • Beautiful scenery
- Monday @ 6:30pm: Dinner in Dillard, GA at The Dillard House Restaurant.

- Monday after dinner: Stay at The Dillard House overnight or depart for your next destination, whether it's going back home or heading back up to drive one of the other amazing roads around the Tail of the Dragon

Details on where/when we will meet in Bowling Green prior to driving down to the Tail of the Dragon will come once details of the Sunday Cruise are finalized.

If you want to be a part of this group, comment in this thread indicating so and I will add you to the list!

I'm interested if this is after or a split off from the Sunday Cruise that MLEE is working. My return trip is to Oak Ridge and any excuse to run the Dragon with a bunch of Camaros is good for me. I'm also Ok to do this on Monday if MLEEs cruise means another day in Bowling Green.

RicSimonis 01-22-2017 09:27 AM

Definitely interested.
I'm leaning toward a Monday run. Would plan on making my way down there Sunday afternoon after the morning cruise.

Here is the motel I stayed when I was there after CamaroFest VI. It is right at the start of the Tail. Dragon Pitt Inn & BBQ.

My son and I did the tail last year, it was a blast, might go again, I think my time was 18 min for the 11 miles, not bad for the first time....

tonyferdie 01-22-2017 08:29 PM

I am new to all this so I apologize in advance, but what is this Tail of the Dragon?

There are a number of different routes, but the main one is an 11-mile stretch of road in NC/TN that has 318 curves in it. Very popular for motorcycles and sports cars to drive.

Their website is down but this page goes into more detail: http://tailofthedragontours.com/wp/d...herohala-loop/

Also these folks are positioned all along the Tail of the Dragon, taking professional pictures of the cars that drive by, that you can later purchase. http://www.killboy.com/#!

Sign us up. We were going to go that way for a few more days of sightseeing and this sound like fun.

Lafourche1 01-25-2017 02:22 PM

Would you consider running Moonshiner 28 out of Deal's Gap and perhaps the Cherohala? I think that 28 is a wonderful road that offers great scenery to go with some great driving. The Cherohala has 55MPH speed limits, too.

I have heard great things about both, I will say that this will be my first experience in the area so if anyone that has done these before can give any suggestions, I'd be more than willing to defer to them.

Personally, my top preference is to hit up the main 11-mile stretch, with the 318 curves and the photographers and such. Would love some nice action shots, and I live in Florida, where curved roads seem to be illegal. However, I'd love to check out either/both routes if others are interested!

I know that both the Moonshiner 28 http://moonshiner28.com/ and the Cherohala http://www.cherohala.com/ are much longer routes than the 11-mile main stretch. However, after hitting up the main spot and back, it looks like we could do either if anyone is interested in an extended drive?

Thoughts from the group?

Subscribed. Interested, but not 100% committed yet.

ZL1 FOR ME 01-26-2017 10:16 PM

Driving all 3 would be great. Drove Tail of The Dragon last November A week before the fire. It was great:-) killboy.com s the web page for the photographers and the price for the photos were reasonable.

All - I spoke to the guy at the Dragon Pit Inn and BBQ a couple days ago and got my room for the night Sunday night. Told him there might be a few of us coming down that evening, looks like a great place. Don't forget to book!

Im probably hitting on the way up and down from Camarofest. Only one hour out of my way.

As I said in the above post. I stayed at the Dragon Pit Inn and BBQ after BG in 2015. Very nice place at a reasonable rate.

Will you be getting in contact with the killboy group to see if they will be there so we can get some nice action shots?

It'll be in the middle of riding season, looks like they're out there daily. Below is directly from their FAQ:

We shoot practically every day of the week from about 10am until 6pm during the riding season. (March – November) Just enjoy your trip, and hopefully when you get home we’ll have some shots of ya.

sherob 01-29-2017 12:25 PM

Just be careful... you don't want any part of your baby to be on this tree. LOL!!!

I have updated the itinerary with both the main Tail of the Dragon as well as Moonshiner 28 into SC for those interested.

All - please let me know your thoughts on the updated itinerary. We still have plenty of time to plan, so let's take care of this so we can enjoy the drive come July :headbang5thgen:

There are several photographers along the route and a few on 28 out of Deal's Gap.

http://s26.photobucket.com/user/bord...20the%20Dragon

I think there are at least three different photographers in the slide show.

For those staying a bit longer, Cade's Cove is only about 50 miles away. That is worth a day to make the trip. You may well get to see a few black bears and other critters up close.

My better half owns a farm in North Carolina and is from there. We visit at least once or twice a year. I love this area of the state.
