New Govt. Mandates Kill Switches in cars 2026 and beyond...

Looks like it gives the govt. power to shut down your vehicle at will....probably cops too. Howya like me now?

Looks like 1) this is a mis interpretation of the anti drunk driving provision in the bill

Check out this article from USA TODAY:

Fact check: No, there's no vehicle 'kill switch' in Biden's 2021 infrastructure bill

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/...g/11066287002/

And 2) this provision of bill barely passed and has a lot of folks concerned that it is simply spying

https://www.washingtontimes.com/news...ound-congress/

As I understand the provision it gave a certain amount of time for the NHTSA to develop a technology that can detect when a car is being drive in an impaired manner. This is expected to include various cameras and sensors. Which CAN be interpreted as spying. If the vehicle is determined to be impaired the vehicle won’t operate.

So for the most part, most of these sensors and cameras exist in every Tesla, GMs Super Cruise (which already stops your car and calls OnStar in the event of a health situation which could be driving impaired) and Fords Blue Cruise and all the other Level 2 and Level 3 ADAS on the market. That being said it’s optional and you can elect to buy a car without the features or just another car. On the flip side some of these cars would actually drive you safer if driving impaired, but until Level 4 ADAS exists a driver must be present and attentive. Super Cruise will shut down and alert you if you are just gazing at the cows going down the road and not looking down the road. But you have to engage Super Cruise for this to even work and it only works on limited highways. Tesla on the other hand …….

So we will see where this goes but it’s a bit of a misinterpretation that the government wants to shut down your car with a kill switch. And pretty much any connected vehicle can be shut down remotely today. OnStar can do this if your Camaro is stolen to help the police get your car back.

While this isn't the kill switch that is being claimed, a kill switch has been suggested MANY times by officials. This is also the perfect system to implement a remote kill switch so even if its not "required" you can imagine how this will slowly roll out kill switches in vehicles until it IS a requirement.

I hate to get all slippery slope argument here, but thats all our government has been doing. Think about how all the EPA requirements started. Its just more regulations and laws that force cars to become more expensive and have more restrictions. So no, this isn't a kill switch mandate, but if you think that isn't coming down the road then you aren't paying attention because they have overtly asked for them, multiple times.

Also, yes... OnStar can remotely shut down the car if its been stolen. That isn't required to have in vehicles and requires having law enforcement go through onstar that you PAY for in specific situations. The problem people have with this proposal is that you get no say in it, and its being directly used against the owner of the vehicle, not a thief. If it has remote access, there's also a good chance it won't have many safety nets that stop it from being abused or just taken over by any government official who deems you unsafe since this isn't a third party add on but rather a government mandate.

Even in the best case scenario this is a piece of tech designed to disable a car that could malfunction or be hacked causing very dangerous situations.

Sorry for the rant, I am a tech guy, I work in tech, I love tech, I love having a car with a lot of tech, but there is a good reason people are upset about this.

First the "anti drunk bill" is written far to vague to know what's going to come from it. I've seen predictions from everything like an automatic breathalyzer that is just less invasive than blowing into a straw every time to cameras that monitor the drivers awareness and yes the kill switch. Each have their drawbacks and potentials for abuse and failure.

Fortunately this isn't a worry for Camaros but I definitely see the possibility for abuse here.

As far as the idea of a kill switch, imagine if the trucks in the trucker protest in Canada had them, it was bad enough they shut down their bank accounts but now they can just kill the trucks that many were living in during the protest too, there goes the heat and power.

Another possibility is a cop using this as part of a speed trap, instead of chasing you down to pull you over he just kills your car, who knows what kind of damage that would cause to the car on top of losing power stearing/breaks.

Or how about an abuser using this to torment their victims.

I'm all for the police having what they need to do their jobs but this is just one of many steps too far. As far as not wanting a car with these features so buy one without, try finding one without seat belts, airbags, crumple zones, plastic bumpers, seatbelt chimes or a myriad of other "safty" features many didn't want as it drove the price of the cars up with sometimes negligible improvements to actual survivability in 99% of accidents and made the cars much more disposable.
