Torque Convertor??
I currently have a 2011 SS with L99. Mods I have done or will be doing are as follows.
Roto-Fab CAI Kooks Long Tube Headers with Hi Flow Cats and Jet Hot Coating 3.91 Rear gears GPI SS1 VVT Cam with all supporting valve train goodies. This will be a STREET CAR ONLY. I have never had an automatic Hot Rod before only Manuals. So my experience with Torque converters is basically nil. I know this Cam can be run on the Stock Converter So??? What are the benefits and disadvantages going with an aftermarket converter? If I decide to go with an aftermarket converter which Stall Speed? 3000-3200? 3200-3400? 3400-3600? and Why??? Will it affect Streetability and how?? Thanks! Dan |
I think the 3200-3400 would be fine for you. I have a 3500 in mine. It's perfect NA but I think it will flash higher with my turbo kit so I would rather have around a 3000 stall before going FI. My tuner setup my car to drive as close to stock as possible until I floor it. Trust me you will love the stall.

I have that cam and ran it for awhile with a stock converter. Yes it will work BUT. It is lazy in the lower RPM's and pushes at the brakes at idle. I run a Yank 3400 power adder converter. Really woke the car up.

It's lazy in the lower RPMs? Isn't that cam specifically made for the lower RPMs?
To the OP, I have intake, longtubes, 3.91s and a 3200 converter and it's a BEAST! A converter is by far one of the best mods for an L99. I talked to Circle D and they said the best daily driver converter is their 278mm 3200....which is what I have. |
I have the TSP Stage 3 cam with all the supporting FBO mods and run a 3600 and it is a monster, and a daily driver, it was a 3200 which was just fine, but with the cam needed just a little more. I would suggest the 3200 for your application, will turn you car into another animal !! Good luck and enjoy sir..

Find out your tq peak and then your ideal stall speed will be 500rpm below. I run a 5C Circle D. For a stock cam it's the biggest I'd run. For your application, I think a 4C would be ideal if you're not gonna do anything else to it.

Do you need to have a trans brake to run let's say a 2800-3200 stall on a l99??
|
Nope...

Just like your car became "a BEAST" with the 3200 converter. Cam's not bad with a stock converter and would highly recommend it. I didn't want anyone to think I was knocking GPI or their products. |

personal experience, YankSS 3600 stall even used it with stock LS2 and it made the launch like a missile. no issued with daily driving it the only disadvantage is higher trans oil temperature which later on installed a big a** cooler which took care of the issue.
shifing between gears was improved a lot, rpm drop way less which kept the car in power band range. |
