Chevrolet Debuts Lightweight Smart Material on 2014 Corvette Stingray

From its fiberglass body in 1953 to its aluminum chassis for 2014, Chevrolet Corvette has a six-decade track record for introducing lightweight materials that improve vehicle performance. With the 2014 Corvette weighing in 99 pounds lighter than its predecessor, that trend continues.

The redesigned seventh-generation sports car is the first vehicle to use a General Motors’-developed lightweight shape memory alloy wire in place of a heavier motorized actuator to open and close the hatch vent that releases air from the trunk. This allows the trunk lid to close more easily than on the previous models where trapped air could make the lid harder to close.

The next (second) installment of GM’s 2014 Stingray Revealed features has been posted. This one focuses on the 2014 Corvette Stingray interior, which features a design, materials, and quality that GM feels is a departure from the much maligned interiors of past Corvettes.

Those are just a representative key and Corvette however, as production of Flacco’s actual C7 will not be until production begins in the Summer-Fall.

That would be Helen Emsely, director of interior design for performance cars, full-size trucks, and large crossovers for Chevrolet and GMC. Five years ago, she was personally picked by Ed Welburn to head up the Corvette and Camaro trim and interior.

Chevy Corvette Stingray Technology to Benefit Future GM Cars and Trucks

The Chevy C7 Corvette Stingray represents the latest and greatest engineering feats of the GM engineers, such as fuel-saving technologies, advanced combustion systems, rev-matching, sophisticated chassis-control systems, and advanced lightweight materials.

The natural question that arises then is if, and how much, of these technologies will trickle down into future GM cars and trucks.

GM has confirmed this morning the debut of the Corvette Stingray Convertible at the Geneva Motor Show on March 5.

Together with the confirmation information, GM released an outline sketch of the Stingray Convertible.

Short interview [video] with GM’s Vice President of Global Design, Ed Welburn, where he talks about his thoughts on the 2014 Corvette Stingray.

“When I think about Corvette, I think about this world-class athlete, and with C7 it’s like that athlete has gone back to the gym. It’s been lifting weights, it’s been getting that muscle toned, and it’s been taking that weight off. And the end result is this very fit, very toned, very aggressive video.”

Of course he’d have nothing negative to say, but we agree :)

RC 1:8 Scale C7 Corvette Stingray Released

Nobody (not even Rick Hendrick or Joe Flacco) can get their hands on a production C7 Corvette Stingray yet, as production does not start until this Summer, but we should all be able to own (and afford) a smaller version of it soon.

Toymaker New Bright has just revealed its 1:8 scale remote controlled C7 Corvette. Check out the photos inside showing how detailed the RC model is, complete with LED lights :)

Superbowl MVP Joe Flacco Wins 2014 Corvette Stingray

If you paid close attention to the post-game celebrations and festivities following last night’s Superbowl, you may have gotten this glimpse at the Torch Red 2014 Corvette Stingray on the field.

It was there being presented to Joe Flacco, who quarterbacked the Baltimore Ravens to the win last night, in the process garnering the MVP award and winning the C7 Corvette, courtesy of GM.
