Don't downshift from 5th to 2nd at 100mph
I tried downshifting from 5th to 4th but messed up and accidentally went into 2nd gear. It shot to 10,000 rpm and locked up the rear end. Took it to my shop today and pulled the valve covers off and I ended up dropping a valve and bending a pushrod. My heads are off and going to the machine shop tomorrow. I should have my car back on Friday, but it's a waste of $1300. That was going to be my money for my Welds and drag radials. Shit happens.

Why were you downshifting at 100 mph?

I thought the computer disabled things such as this from happening?

A rev limiter can't do anything about mechanical over-rev's.

The computer knows to block second and third for skip shift..... It should be able to block second from a destructive downshift..... The solenoids are there so I wonder why they haven't ever done anything with it. I'm sure you aren't the first to have done this. I had a 2004 silverado with a 5 speed and was wide open, went to bump 3rd to 4th at redline and accidently got second, rear tires locked up and the the tach went as far as it could. The truck only had a couple thousand miles on it and it ran great until I traded it in at 85k. Guess I got lucky....

I'm sorry to hear about that. That sucks.
Side note: just out of curiosity, has anyone ever experienced when then go do downshift, and feels like you cannot put the shifter into gear? This is my first manual car and idk if that is a safety feature or something is wrong. For example: say I'm driving 60 in 4th, I go to downshift into 3rd, but it won't allow me to put into 3rd. I return the stick to neutral, then put it into 3rd No Problem. Is it something to do with RPMs, or speed? Or is there something wrong with the clutch? It doesn't happen all the time, just randomly. Idk if it's me doing spirited driving and expecting too much from the transmission, or its a safety feature. Thanks in advance guys. Sorry to hijack! |
