I wasn't too familiar with the LT1 prior to this post even having driven one, but a few minutes on google tells me that it has quite a few substantial mechanical upgrades over the standard V6 beyond the motor:

As others have said, there are a LOT of differences between an "SS" and an "LT1"... The "LT1" is basically the 2LT car with a V-8 engine...

My first time finding out the 2LT trim only adds leather seats, I thought they spaced out the features more there https://www.chevrolet.com/performanc.../trims/compare (click All Columns using Desktop) https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=620886 - How I found the Heavy-Duty Cooling Package was still being offered, literally less than 10 LT cars with it

Wanted to also add if you have the Auto trans for the LT1 it does have the tranny cooler. It has been confirmed I have it on mine. The manual LT1 does not have one though.

LT1 has different exterior look and less options available when building it out but when you decode an LT1 vin# in a GM catalogue the car comes up as a 1SS. It could be how the vin#'s were done and the fact that the LT1 trim came out afterwards as a more affordable option. I work for GM and can verify first hand that the catalogue does indeed class them as 1SS's.

LT1 is a great package if you are going full base model and want your own mods. The problem was during covid especially in CA before (MY 22) the copper free brakes, the dealers were ordering an LT1's with every package up to gazoo. I went to a few dealers with 55k LT1's, not worth it.
When ordering and adding RS package, tech package, NPP, the differential was 5-6k from a 2SS. Immediately swapping out the all seasons and fatter rims would be at least half that (although you could go 1LE width), so not worth it for me. If I ordered it base with no options, then LT1 was a great deal at around 37-38k (2023). IMO its still trackable with the only thing really needing to be added is wheels and an engine oil cooler. I think it comes down to which front end you like.

It's weird they called this thing the LT1 given the LT1 is the engine and the 1LT is a cheaper trim. It would've been neat if they'd just put a z28 on there to make it stand out more and people knew it had a V8 in there.

Do you think more people associate a V8 with the Z28 rather than LT1? For me, as a 45yo woman, when I think of an LT1 I think small block Chevy (non LS) When I think of Z28 I think RPO code designation/special performance package that means more than just a motor. Similar to modern day 1le, SS, RS, ZL1. The LT1 motor in the Corvette was called a ZR1 option. 70-72 The LT1 motor in the Camaro was called a Z28 option. 67-74 The LT1 motor in the Nova was called a Yenko Deuce .1970ish Since 1970 there have been 3 generations of LT motors (LS is a different topic) 70-72 Gen 1 LT1 92-97 Gen 2 LT1 2013-current Gen 5 LT1

Just a few corrections, Val from an old guy who was there back then:
1) The LT-1 was, as you pointed out, a 70-72 solid lifter engine option for the Corvette. The ZR-1 option was 71 and 72; only. This was Chevy's small block race option that, among other things, included the LT-1 engine and omitted a radio and heater. I have a relative who has one in his collection. 2) The LT-1 was NOT an RPO from 67-69 in the Z-28. The 67-69 Z-28 was an RPO that included a stroked, solid lifter 283 which yielded a 302 C.I.D. The redesigned Camaro for 1970 1/2 model year was all new and RPO Z-28 became a stand alone with a solid lifter 350 C.I.D. That lasted thru 1972. For 1973-74, the Z-28 came with an L-82 hydraulic lifter 350 C.I.D. More similar to RPO L-46, a 1969-1970 Corvette only option. 3) You are mostly correct about the LT-1 solid lifter in the 1970 (only) Yenko Deuce. Chevy dealer Don Yenko , through Central Office Production, received a late 1970 model run of Novas equipped thru the back door (175 cars) as a good dealership award of sort( and he had a racing program of earlier model year Corvairs, Camaros, and Chevelles) thru Vince Piggens. He enhanced those Novas( to essentially beat high muscle car insurance rates) with decals, headrest call outs and an optional tach; stick or automatic on the floor( Hurst prepped for the autos). Truly unique and highly collectable. Another 25 (?) or so of these Novas went as Non- Yenkos to Canada. |

To me the gen 6 LT1 is the equivalent the third gen W66 L78 WS6 Firebird Formula. Those were for folks that perhaps didn't want the aesthetic of the T/A, or the cost. Think Jim Rockford.
