Another note for jumping other cars- always make it a habit to NOT have your car running when you are jumping another car, I never even have the keys in the ignition when I do it. If there is anything wrong with the car you are helping, there is a chance their trouble code can transfer to your car and through a "check engine" light in your car, dont ask me how I know this.
If their car cannot get started after the initial turn overs, then there is a lot more wrong with it then just a dead batttery.
Luckilly my moms car was just dead from her leaving her lights on
How can a code transfer through their battery into your battery then into your computer? No data transfer there so not really possible. And I always have the engine running when I jump someone.

I really dont know either, just something I was told by a couple of different mechanics, one time I was told that when I came in for a trouble light on my '04 Monte Carlo, the guy was actually one of my friends that I trusted with my car. I told him I jumped someones car the prior day that obviously had issues other then just a dead battery, he reset the trouble code and I no longer had the code come back up which by the way was something to to with a bad alternator....and my alternator checked out just fine.
It may be a myth but I have jumped other folks cars with out my car on or running, and never had any issues afterward since then.....gonna continue doing it that way.
I also DO know that if you weld on a vehicle while the battery is connected you CAN and WILL blow out the alternator........dont ast me how i know that as well......almost got fired when the alternator on my company work truck lost its alternator the day after I welded on the ladder rack while it was on it......

Im betting the alternator code was from some logic in the computer being tripped when the added load of starting a car was applied and batt voltage got lower than expected for an instant

I'm sure that is probably the case.

I had to jump my Impala the other day with our new Equinox and had to search for the ground. The engine compartment is plastic.
