So...who else has been rear-ended? I have a question for you..
Hello everyone! last month on our way back home from Yellowstone driving through Boise Idaho in our 2010 SS when we were rear-ended on the interstate much to my surprise the steering column separated!! I was driving and I had nothing left to hang on to... hitting my head on the roof and causing more injury to my person. Even with the seat belt on... anyone else?

Sorry about the accident & the damage. We were rear ended coming home from visiting family in January 2015. Although the rear was banged up, there was no other damage, the steering wheel/column was un harmed and the air bags didn't deploy.

Been rear-ended while parked, and on the highway on a hit and run, but only slight cosmetic damage each time.

I was rear ended while I was driving about 15 in slow and go traffic and some guy behind me fell asleep at the wheel and hit me hard. Steering wheel did not come off and all got repaired.

I cannot imagine this is supposed to happen due to a rear end collision, especially odd that its been reported here twice; I have to wonder if its happened more times that we dont know about? Something seems terribly wrong here. If this were MY car I wouldn't let insurance or a bodyshop near it until I knew for certain why it happened, because all the insurance is going to want to do is repair it (NO WAY) or replace it with LKQ (again, NO WAY, since that column presumably is going to have the same potential issue). NOTE TO OP: I hope you and everyone in the car are OK! It would be great if you could find someone qualified to do a failure analysis (independant of GM) determine what happened, then bring GM into the loop. Unfortunately, no one has those resources other than GM, so, when you report this to GM, I hope GM investigates, and that you get an answer. Last edited by BlueStreakHouTX; 06-12-2016 at 10:49 AM. I was stopped for a turn and was rear ended so hard my 2012 Camaro was totaled. Everything worked as it should the seat belt pretensioner went off and no issues with the steering wheel.
That is crazy the steering wheel would come loose like that, especially in a rear end collision. Did you get pushed into another car? You mentioned your head hit the roof which is weird if you were rear ended. When I was hit from behind it pushed me back in the seat and the seat belt pretensioner pulled me back even more. |

Wow, truly sorry to hear that. I was also rear-ended fairly hard, but no steering column damage.

Was it pulled apart? Holding on to the wheel so tight the force of the accident pulled it apart? Can you post pictures of the steering wheel assembly? Close with detail of what is in the dash and what is at the end of the steering wheel?

Sorry to hear this ! I hope your ok.
Be sure to file with HIS insurance for "DIMINISHED VALUE" of your car. "DIMINISHED VALUE" is the value lost in your car now that it has been in an accident. Basically its the difference in value your car was worth with no damage vs the value of it now having been damaged. Car Fax showing that its been damaged is a bad thing when you go to sell it. Example Value of your car before damage = $25000 Value of your car with a damage claim on it = $22000 HIS insurance company needs to pay your $3000 (As well as repair your cars damage to like new condition) Not all states have this, and not many people know about it. Look it up for your state. I'm in Texas and I was rear ended and got $2500 from damage to my daily driver GTI years ago. They also paid to fix my car to like new condition. Toque |
