GM's Reuss says rear-wheel drive Scion FR-S rival "on the list"
Now this is interesting news. The FRS is a great little sports car.
GM's Reuss says rear-wheel drive Scion FR-S rival "on the list" According to Australian site CarSales.com.au, General Motors North American boss, Mark Reuss, has expressed high interest in creating a small, rear-wheel-drive coupe to rival the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ. If something like this ever came to production, it could take the shape of the Chevrolet Code 130R concept car (pictured) that debuted at last year's Detroit Auto Show. "It's on the list. It would be a great entry for us," Reuss told CarSales.com.au, adding, "I don't know if they (Toyota) are making any money but it is a very attractive car." A production version of the 130R would likely ride on a small, rear-drive platform like GM's Alpha architecture, which currently underpins the Cadillac ATS and will eventually be used in the next Chevrolet Camaro. "We would do something with the knowledge of Alpha and the background, but we wouldn't take Alpha and try and shrink it," said Reuss. We've heard faint whispers about exactly this scenario previously, and the fact that it's still on the table is a good sign. Of course, if development hasn't started yet and a project like this gets the green light, there's no telling how far off a small, rear-drive coupe from GM could be. And considering how popular the Scion and Subaru twins have proven (at least in their early life), GM would be wise to get the ball rolling sooner rather than later. |

Sounds good that they're entertaining the thought...
But if they wouldn't shrink the smallest Alpha significantly to go there...I don't understand why they couldn't just position the base-model 6th-gen Camaro against those cars. Bringing to life a second, similarly-sized car seems like old-GM cannibalism to me. |

Well, depending on how 'right-sized' GM wants this FR-S/BRZ competitor...I've come across rumors on other sites that speak about developing a smaller RWD architecture.

Now that, I could see....just had a discussion the other day, in fact, with someone about a replacement for the lost Kappa twins and how much we wanted to see a small little Chevy or Cadillac roadster.

I've known about it, but GMI's working on getting more details right now.

Smart idea! Get the youngins' interested then they'll move up when they can afford more. But if they use the above design to go against the FRS game over. It has to be a sleek designed car.

If they do, I hope it doesn't look like that 130r concept. To me, the FR-S looks a lot better then that 130r concept. I think its the front end.

I can't imagine that GM would be considering a production 130R as a FR-S/BRZ competitor. There's about an 8 inch difference in length between Alpha and the FR-S/BRZ wheelbase (109.3 vs. 101.2), totally different size class.

the 130r looks like a copy of the 1 series BMW. The FR-S is much better looking.

Will anyone wager that they are getting this out ASAP so that when they discontinue the Camaro in the next 10-15 years due to MPG requirements that they will have something to point to and say "You don't need a Camaro, because we still have THIS!"
