Forgive the oldschool stupidty.

If replacing the engine can you get a basic mailorder tune to get the thing going again and enough to travel to a shop to get car setup and a thorough dyno/street tune? Also have an SCT Handheld that came with Supercharger that is sitting on shelf collecting dust. Thx

If the new engine is comparably setup to the old engine (ex. injectors, cam, etc.) then yes. The more mods and/or the larger the change, then the likelihood diminishes.

To elaborate, let's say that you have 35# (pounds per hour) injectors, and the computer thinks you have 35# injectors. All is good. But, if you change them to 70# (twice the flow as before), but the computer doesn't know this, you'll end up with 2x the amount of fuel being injected. The fuel trims can only compensate like 20%, not 200%.

OK so if going from 376 FI cammed etc with app 65 lb injectors to a 415-418 with 80-85, it's probably better safer to tow it tune it then waste money on mailorder?
Thanks for the reply.

I would not necessarily say safer as it still needs to ran to be tuned. With the mail order you will get a tune based on your mods to get it safely started. Then you can go from there. Data log and retune, or get it to a dyno.
I did the supercharger, cam and headers all at the same time. Mail order tune got me safely started.

Get in touch with your tuner and have them do a base file for you. We do it all the time...customer has too radical of a set up to drive to us, so they send in their ECM ahead of time, we flash it, then they drive to us to finish up the tuning. It's also nice so you can start/shake down the car before it gets to the tuner - in case something else needs attention before tuning.

Glad to see this thread. Getting ready to change my fuel system and put a TT setup on the car, reading this will help me get along a little better.

Just please don't go bananas with it on a tune like that...if you've got a good tuner, you're probably going to have something safe enough to drive agressively with, but don't risk it as there's too much money tied up in an engine...if they get you a tune that starts and idles ok, and you can let the engine get up to temp with nothing strange going on...just take it easy on the go pedal while you drive it to the dyno.
