Chrysler Finished?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29944834

"Frustrated administration officials said Chrysler cannot function as an independent company under its current plan. They have given Chrysler a 30-day window to complete a proposed partnership with Italian automaker Fiat SpA, and will offer up to $6 billion to the companies if they can negotiate a deal before time runs out.

If a Chrysler-Fiat union cannot be completed, Washington plans to walk away, leave[sic] Chrysler destined for a complete sell-off. No other money is available."

Good riddance - there is not enough market to justify supporting 3 American companies when the largest one of them is barely holding on to a 23% market share.

It was a waste to support Chrysler with the first round of funds back in December. The govt. is right (for once) in giving Chrysler the final boot.

In all of my friends and family, I don't know of one person who has ever liked Chrysler or bought their products. Ford? Yes. GM? Absolutely. Chrysler? No one I know would cry if they folded tomorrow.

The company has been on life support almost since the govt. bailed them out in the first place 30 years ago. With the excpetion of a brief stint in the early-mid 1990's (when our dear friend Bob Lutz worked there), they have always had lackluster product and sub-par quality.

Come on guys, there are plenty of MOPAR enthusiasts and a lot of good people work for Chrysler, no need to cheer for the potential of their collapse. Chrysler does seem to have the largest problems of the big three, with platforms and technology that's simply lagging behind the competition across the board. Despite that I expect Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep will survive in some form though and would be particularly shocked to see Jeep disappear. Even if things don't work out with Fiat something will happen, possibly they get recreated as a leaner more focused company (that will cost investment money though, which is hard to come buy right now), it's also quite possible the remains will be bought up by the Chinese or any number of other groups.

I pray to god that it doesn't come to this.. I'd love it if the Indians took it. Seriously, diesel Jeeps in Calcutta? That would help them a lot with their truck development. Not to mention the big Philipino market for Jeeps and assorted trucks.

India, buy Jeep. You guys need it, and deserve it with what you pulled out of that cobra basket: The Nano.

I've always liked Jeep. But of the Big Three, I think Chrysler has EASILY had the most substandard product. God hears me and I'm telling the truth, everyone I know who has owned a Dodge truck or suv has had to replace their tranny. EVERYONE. I could just be an isolated situation and we shouldn't turn this into a performance thread but it's true.

That being said, I don't know the sales figures before the economy problem hit. I don't beleive it would be good for the others if Chrysler went OOB.

We dont want any American car maker to go away. It will have a detrimental effect on the whole industry.

There is no way to justify supporting the weakest one (which has been the weakest one for years) when the market share of the largest of the 3 is barely a quarter of the market.

I know some people have sentimental reasons to keep Chrysler, but finacially it doesn't cut it anymore. The numbers do not work.

Do note that GM also has that same 30 day window to shape up as well ( as I watch the news this morning) and is it true that the gov. forced GM's CEO to resign

:( Man this shit sucks, it's not looking good for both automakers, and Ford is probably laughing their asses of
