Power them by a switched 12v source and most of your problems will be solved.

Don't feel too bad. I saw a guy in a parking lot once with a new Vette and a pile of shattered side glass . I asked what happened, someone break into your car? Yes, he said I did. %*&###*& battery went dead, and @&*#&$# GM put electric door handles on this car, there is no way to get in it with a dead battery. I showed him the emergency manual key cylinder above the license plate, and the manual release lever for the door on the floor. He could has spit nails . And his door was all scratched to hell from the falling glass. Then I mentioned, he might want to unplug the iPod from the cig lighter, that outlet stays hot at all times.
And drove off quick before he strangled me.

Actually he knew the battery was in the trunk, but didn't know there were terminals for jump starting under the hood.

Does anyone know how long the car has to sit before the computer turns off the battery? (this is a serious question)

First thing I do the day I get a new car is read my owners manual. Seems most don't do this...not sure why.

As for battery shut off, most GM Products the last 10 years shut off things that are plugged into 12V ports, map lights etc after 20 minutes. I'm guessing it's in the owners manual somewhere.

One more lil detail ..

Lets say you have to get in the trunk as the battery has failed, cable broke whatever ... you can if ya fit, lower the rear seat and pull the kidnap escape handle (manual trunk release)

I LOL'd hard at this

you could wire in a relay to those neons. so that they can only be on when your key is in the RUN or ACC position, while still having a switch to turn them on and off while your driving. That way if your key isn't in the ignition you don't have to worry about them killing your battery.

I have my current car wired so my amp will only work if the key is in "ON". The amp will drain the battery in 10-20 minutes without the engine running, so I just disabled it when the key is on "ACC" to prevent that. It's been great.

When I went to look at some cars at the dealer they were all dead and needed jump starts. They told me that the computer shuts down the car completely if the car sits too long. This is the kind of shutdown I was curious about. Is it like 1 week or 2 weeks. Anyone know how long the car can sit before the computer shuts down everything and the car needs a jump ?

If only there was, like a manual that had tips in it for owners of a vehicle. It could tell you how to open your trunk from the inside, where your jumper posts are under the hood, maybe even things like your engine's oil capacity.

I'm gonna call GM tomorrow, I think I'm on to something!

The negative terminal is actually that little bolt you can see below and to theright of the positive jumper. The bolt that holds on your air box.

(I hope that helps)
