Grinding noise after transmission fluid exchange?

I got a transmission fluid exchange from the dealer about a month ago (car is 8 years old, 75,000 miles) and ever since then it has had a quiet grinding noise under the hood on start up. It kind of sounds like coffee being made.

It doesn't start happening until I put it in R and it's not as bad if I let the car come to an idle before shifting into R.

It also happened for a very short period after I put it from R to D and start driving. It's louder in D but only lasts for a bout a second and then goes away completely until the next morning.

Any thoughts?

That sounds like something is majorly damaged. I would have taken it back immediately, after waiting a month I doubt they would take any responsibility for the issue. All automatics are time bombs, I drive manuals for a reason. Good luck.

I wonder if they used the wrong fluid or pressure flushed it and harmed something?

They said that they drain it, run a cleaner fluid through until their machine detects no contaminants, and then fill it back up.

You really think they'd be able to deflect major transmission damage after only a month since being the only people to touch the transmission?

This dealership is one of the largest performance car dealers in the region, so I'd hope they'd have a little more integrity than that.

Same for me a while back, dealer had it a quart low.

There's no need to run a "cleaner fluid" through the transmission. Replace fluids and go, or flush with the same fluid.


Absolutely, a month is a lot of time and way to long for you to wait to mention the issue. I put several thousand miles on my car every month, I would never expect someone to warranty an issue that I likely made worse by ignoring while continuing to operate the vehicle. Regardless of time, in my opinion, their liability stops the second you ignore the issue, the continued abuse was then your choice.

I hope you get your issue resolved, just don't blame them for your decision to abuse the car in a damaged state. I think you'd be very lucky to get them to do anything at this point, . Be nice, play your cards right and see what happens.
