New car smell too strong, give us a Headache?
My wife and I have had many new cars, we love the new car smell usually but our 2SS/RSS has a very strong smell of chemicals. I put 200 miles on it today and it is up to a little over 300 miles now but the smell is still very strong. We can’t enjoy the smell especially the leather smell over all the other strong odors coming from the car. It really is strong smell in my garage also. We swear we get mild headaches after spending much time in the car.
Has anyone else noticed this? How soon do the nasty chemical smells take to burn off so you can enjoy the leather smell? Would it help to power wash the underside of the car? I did notice when I picked the car up that the strongest chemical smells were coming from underneath the driver side which I just assumed it was oils on the exhaust used in manufacturing to prevent corrosion prior to assembly. Other than that WE LOVE OUR CAR! and it's fun to watch all the people driving around us and their reactions. |

You will get used to it, just takes a little time. Maybe you could drive with your windows down more often

Got a headache too -LOL
First 2 days with the car, the smell gave me an intense headache. Third day I opened the trunk, folded the rear seat down, opened both doors all the way and blew a large fan thru the cabin for several hours.
No more headaches...

Now I'm the opposite. I keep my windows closed to keep that new car/leather smell inside.

Don't use max / recirculate for a month or so. Just ac with vent or no ac and windows down.

Love the smell. I wish it would smell like that for years.

Try this in a year or so...
To get that smell back after it fades...
Get a scrap of freshly dyed leather, say something 10" x 20" or whatever. Roll it up and tie it. Then stuff it under your seat.

The only thing I ever smelled was HOT METAL for the first two days of driving. The interior is normal.

Good idea 14Pilot. I will try that with that fan and everything opened up.
All don't get me wrong I love new car smells, this one is just too intense (not a good leather smell). Again I have had many new cars in my life but this one is a little different for some reason. I also love the idea one posted about how to get that new car smell back in a few years by getting fresh leather scraps, rolling them up and stuffing them under the seats. |

There's a air freshener brand called "Homeless person pants" that will get rid of the new car smell. I'll see if I can find it on the net.

The smell is nice, but its DANGEROUS.
Your new car's interior is made out of plastic, rubber and other materials that contain toxins. The coloring, bleaching, finishing, etc are made from even more toxic substances (don't eat your car!) . In the summer your car's interior bakes, and those toxins can get released into the air inside your car. You should really open your windows right away and turn on the fan to freshen the air inside your car. No matter how yummy it smells, it's not worth lung problems down the road. |

The only smell I noticed 1st few days was like Rubber wires burning and I think that was exaust and oils burning off but that went away! If it bothers you that bad just leave windows down while driving and crack them when you park outside if you can keep eye on your car
