I see it happening to the Vast Majority of people, but not quite that quick.
Young people don't care about cars and many don't want to drive. Many people can't drive but get behind the wheel anyway. Who would have thought that Uber or Lyft would change the Transport system and the poor smucks that are driving their cars into the ground doing will be screwed! University of South Florida just bought a Fleet of Teslas to shuffle students around that don't have a car. I'm not giving up a Gas powered Fun Car! |

Don't want to work, don't want to get dirty, don't want to drive...Who birthed these cyborgs?!? I did, I guess, but my children and most of their friends, are much more old school than what 'statistics' show. My 20-something daughters love their cars and trucks.

I can see it, really cars main purpose is to get you from point a to b. Some of us actually enjoy driving them but imagine just paying for use time in community cars as opposed to owning it. You use the app on your phone to tell it what time you need it and it will be sitting in your driveway at that time. No maintenance, no gas no plates...just pay per use. Of course they will be driverless and you tell it were to go via app. You can program it to be in you driveway every day at the same time to pick you up for work and it will be sitting there when you need to go home

I've heard stats like this too, but I don't believe it is anywhere near that close. First someone needs to start selling a car that actually has really good truly self driving ability, then we will need to wait a while before it actually trickles into cheaper cars, takes over all cheaper cars, and then for the majority of older cars to fall off the roads...I bet it takes 30 years from the time that the first truly driverless car hits the roads and the time when the great majority of cars are actually driverless.
Additionally, a community car subscription may work well for someone who needs a car once in a while and lives in the city, but for those of us in rural areas these services would just not be practical. Cant judge the millenials too hard....some of us love our cars and show up to work every day willing to work like crazy. I dont disagree that there are slackers in this generation, but I also dont have to look too hard to find people who are not driven to suceed from the generations that came before me.

Given that there are 300 million cars in the US alone, and that cars last a long time, there will be a lot of privately-owned cars for a long time to come.
That being said... 1) Most car owners are not passionate about cars. This is nothing new, as the best-seller lists have been filled with boring cars as long as I've been alive. 2) Cars are the second-largest expense for most households, and if they are used 1 hour/day, then someone is shelling out a lot of money for something to sit 95% of the time. 3) Urbanization is a long-term trend through most of the world, and that is not a trend that favors individual car ownership. From the objective standpoint of going from point A to point B, some sort of car sharing/borrowing program makes a lot of sense for certain users - not everyone, by any means, but for those who live in areas with sufficient population density, it's simply a better choice. Such a scheme could actually make life better for car enthusiasts; instead of spending my budget on a payment, parking, and insurance for some boring econobox that gets used infrequently, I could use that money and space on something interesting and borrow a practical vehicle when it's time to run an errand.
