so w/ 400hp it should run high 12's in 1/4? right?

i ran yesterday at the track a 06 gto 400hp auto and it was also tuned and he ran only a 13.4 in 1/4... i ran in my 05 gt auto a 13.3 in 1/4 w much less hp. i hope the camaro is much faster than this gto

Well, there are a number of factors that make the GTO as slower than an F-body and equally as fast as your GT...

First of all, weight. The GTO weighs in at approx 3,750 lbs. If they are taking the weight issue as seriously as the reports indicate, then the Camaro should be able to undercut that. Secondly, the GTO is fairly nose heavy with a 55/45 weight distribution. Third of all, the IRS in the GTO was know to be very poorly developed and has serious problems maintaining traction. The stock tires on the GTO are fairly skinny to handle that 400 HP LS2 as well. Also, you can not discount the driver's abilities - there is a lot of room for error there.

Now, none of these issues by themselves are really that big of a deal, but when you combine all of these small deficiencies you get one big deficiency. I think the Camaro will easily be able to out do a GTO as the Zeta IRS is supposed to be leaps and bounds better than the GTOs, They are doing all they can within reason to keep the weight down, and it should have a bigger motor (if you go with the LS3 version)

+1 to Casull's remarks.

I've raced a few GTOs with my Mustang GT as well, and I really have to agree with the stock street tire comment.

The LS2 GTO is putting down 400 ft-lbs of torque; however, depending on the tire option, GTOs either run 235 or 245 wide tire. 235s tires aren't enough for our 320 ft-lbs Mustang GTs. Imagine what another 80 ft-lbs would do to those same tires.

That is why people with LS2 GTOs have cut anywhere from a 12.9X to a low 14 second bone stock. You really gotta know how to keep traction.

A good track tire goes a long way to make LS2 GTOs pretty damn quick despite their weight and IRS.

But to answer your question I am very confident that a LS3 Camaro will cut mid to high 12s all day long. My Mustang GT is in the high 12s as it sits and I just have the basic bolt-ons.

The word on th street is the LS3 will pack 430HP... take a look.

The official unveiling is apparently set for this Saturday, April 28 at the C5/C6 Bash at the National Corvette Museum in BowlingGreen, but thanks to a poster at Digital Corvettes, you can get sneak preview of the 2008 Corvette and its LS3 V8 right now. The new mill is expected to pump out 430 horsepower, and the '08 Vette will also sport new 5-spoke wheels and interior tweaks, among other things. We'll have to wait until the weekend for the full dog & pony show to go down, but one thing's certain: the presence of 430 standard horsepower will only further cement the Corvette's standing as an unbelievable performance value. Production of the LS3-powered Vettes is scheduled to start this week.

Thanks for the tip, Drew!

She's beautiful

Even at 430hp, I'm sure that GM left some horsepower on the table for future bumps during the lifecycle of the LS3.

Just Thinking.............

I have not heard any mention of this and thought this might be the correct thread to post this on; As I recall, the LT1 in my '94 Impala SS came with (a measly) 260 HP, while the same year LT1 Camaro was like 275 HP and then the same year LT1 Corvette was 300 HP.
SO, while I am highly excited about a 450ish HP LS3 in the 5th gen, with all the talk about the 2008 Corvette specifications being released THIS WEEKEND, rumor has it that it may be 430 HP, I could see another LS3 with what, 405 HP maybe?
I guess my point is, there could be a variety of LS3s with different HP ratings (different cam grinds, different computer programming, different exhaust, injection or supercharged, etc.) available for different applications (Camaro base V8, SS, Z28, even Impala SS and so on) as opposed to LS3 OR L92.
I'm sure others have considered this but I just don't think I've read it. What do you think 3whiterag?
Ken
