I've been waiting to answer this question because I just don't know. I will have to sell off my 02 SS, use the cash to pay off the remaining balance on my wifes car, and use what's left over for a down payment. Still, I don't know exactly what I'm going to be able to afford. I'll just have to wait and see. In 2 1/2 years, I get a BIG raise. That will help for sure, but it's just going to be a waiting game for now.

The only way I see any dealer I've ever dealt with doing that is if you have them install aftermarket wheels BEFORE you take delivery of the vehicle. Speaking of that, I hate it when dealerships sell new cars with mods like wheels, tires, etc already on the vehicle. They sell you those parts at a nice huge markup, but they also do not give you any credits toward the OEM parts that are now long gone - nice practice

My target is $30k. I would probably be able to swing another 2 or 3k but I'd be pushing it. I know I won't be able to afford the "Top Dawg" model, but as long as I have a V8, automatic tranny (my wife doesn't drive stick), and a few bells and whistles I'll be happy. I'd love a convertible but I doubt the verts will be less that $32k.

I'm aiming for less than 35K... but this depends on how 'house poor' I am at that point. The cost of housing near Boston is STILL ludicrous so it may be a while before I can swing it.
Plus, I want to keep my MINI Cooper S as a collector-car, so that sort of limits what down payment options I might have... We'll see. If they can manage a LS3 V8 for less than $30k then I'd probably do that and wait for the Z28 to come out and trade up after a few years. ~LSx |

I hear you... although housing in Indy is absolutely nowhere near what it is in Baaaston . My wife and I are buying a house this fall, so I haven't been able to save ANY money for the Camaro as it is all going toward the house and I really want to keep my truck as well and not have to trade it in. This is why I refuse to spend more than $35k and realistically $32k is my cut off unless, like I said, it is really something special. Withthe amount of flexibility GM has in terms of engine offerings, I really have faith that they will deliver a strong V-8 at the $30k or under price range. |

My cutoff for the Camaro is between $40-$45 K for an LS3 V8 model. Since I'm in Canada, the difference in the Canadian dollar and higher taxes, that works out to be similiar to the Americans folks with a cuttoff of $30-$35K. I'm not that keen on dropping Shelby GT500 type money for a top dog Camaro. But I have to have a nice low profile rim package on the car and heated leather seats (Its cold up here in the winter time!).

You could easily find a home like you just described in the $90-100,000 price range. I guess to give you some perspective, we are looking at spending around $180,000 and that will get us around 3,000 sq ft and anywhere from 1/8 acre to 3/4 acre. For $400,000 you can get anywhere from 1600 sq feet on 3 acres of land to 6,100 sq ft on 1/3 of an acre.... Although i have to say that I feel your pain. One of the main reasons we moved from Chicago was the cost of living. We were looking for homes there and they were pretty close to what you are looking at although not quite that extreme. For a starter home you would be looking at about $300,000 in the suburbs and well into the $400's within the city with NO land. |

My house is 1800 sq ft w/ just over 1/4 acre and a 1 car garage, finished basement w/kitchen area. $116,000 (3 years ago) It may be $135,000 now, but I really have no idea. Mind you mine was a 'friend of family' deal. But still we didn't get THAT big a discount. |

Yeah, that's about what I thought... for your entertainment, look at this:
http://vow.mlspin.com/clients/report.asp?mls=70543854 This is roughly what we are looking at for our 'starter home'. I wish I could say the salarys around here were higher-to-match but they aren't, so house poor we will be! ~LSx |

1806 square feet w/ a 2 car garage and 3 bedroom....lot about 1/4 acre...$127,500 two years ago and is now worth about $150K...and worth more when we are done doing the remodeling and upgrades. We are painting right now and have a lot still to do...gonna do some tile as well.
Those are some crazy prices considering size of lot and sq foot. San Antonio has some of the least expensive living and is one of the top cities in the nation where people move to retire. We should have a poll on this thread for what we're willing to spend. |
