Further, don't bet on it being the base engine, either:

Don't count out the EcoBoost being sold as an equal or slightly less powerful extra cost option. Ford is already doing that in at least three cars.

Didn't they already pawn this failure once? Here we go again - should it be labeled the Mustang III?

Sounds like they're going to attempt to position it as a "desirable" option.....

I'd pit a mid-level EcoBoost 4 Mustang up against a 3.6L V6 6th-gen any day.....

Meanwhile, we can leave our turbo 4 as the efficient base-model...where it belongs.

They are Ecoboosting the hell out of all there other cars. So why would this be any surprise

It wouldn't surprise me to see the 5.0 get Ecoboosted for the Gt500. It sounds like a supercharger isn't going to fit under the bonnet of the new design.

Yes they are boosting as already confirmed. High probability speculation and estimates reveal this...

"The 2015 Ford Mustang is slated to get a fuel-efficient 2.3-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine... The engine is based on the turbocharged 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine featured in the 2013 Ford Focus ST... Engine output is likely to rise from 252 horsepower to 300 hp in 2.3-liter form, according to company insiders."

And turbo is the way instead of supercharging... like you stated, due to minimal room under the hood of the S550...

"The engine bay on this 2015 Ford Mustang Mule reveals notably tighter confines than the current model. The current Mustang's engine bay is essentially a square, with room available for components to be found from corner-to-corner. The engine bay found on this 2015 Mustang Mule shows structural elements that pinch noticeably between the wheel wells and the grille-opening. Instead of the rather blunt, squared-off nose of the current Mustang (which is mirrored by the shape of the engine bay), the 2015 Mule suggests that a more shapely front fascia could be in the works. Take a look at the angled headlights of Ford's Evos concept--which span between the front wheel arches and the grille--and compare that to the new shape of the engine bay found on the 2015 Mule, and the similarity is instantly apparent."

I can't imagine a 6 cylinder being cheaper than a four. That would definitely change the way people feel about pony cars and the drivetrains they should have.

I would be very surprised if they didn't drop the EcoBoost in it.

The next-gen Focus RS is supposedly going to see 350hp from the same 2.3l Ecoboost. That could mean a very responsive drivetrain for the aftermarket. I see an SVO on the horizon.
