Authorization code needed for GM computer flash after gear install?

Took my SS to the dealer to have the computer re flashed after I installed a 3.91 differential. They told me I needed an "authorization code" for them to get the calibration from GM.

It looks like you get an authorization code with the Chevy 3.91 gear kit, but I got the differential used, so I don't have an authorization code which my dealer says I need. Has anyone else ran into this?

Any tuner should be able to set your calibration for your gear set. The only thing is, your counter in the ECM will show one rewrite, which could cause warranty issues.

Yes your dealer is correct.
GM will only flash the ECM with a factory calibration for the gear change if you purchase the gear kit.

The gear kit comes with a special code label and the tech would call in the code. GM then binds the gear upgrade to your VIN in case you ever had a problem in the future, the correct ECM calibration would be put into your car at any dealer by any owner.

Does each kit come with a unique authorization code? Reason I ask is that there was one for sale on the forum last month and he took a pic of the instruction sheet with the auth code visible.

If it's not unique to each install kit you could literally print the picture out and hand the code to the dealer.

I'd say they are unique as once you use the auth code and it's assigned to the VIN it probably is recorded in their system that way. Mine came with an authorization code but I bought the GM kit from a member on here.

They are unique codes and only work once. Same for remote starts and other genuine parts/accessories that require a computer update to use.

I talked with Chevrolet/GM customer service and they said even if you bought a new diff for a car that it didn't come in you couldn't get it re-flashed at the dealer it's either you buy the gear kit or have a aftermarket tuner recal your speedo. So I bought the kit from Maureen and my local dealer is installing it at the end of the week.....

Makes great business sense. This way GM keeps track of NEW GM gears that are used in YOUR car thus keeps the warranty intact. It's one way they're allowing you to mod your car with their parts and maintain the warranty.

Can you post your all-in price for the swap, including parts and labor?

Thanks

I got the gear set for Maureen at Rodgers Chevrolet for 400.00 bucks

2 qts of 75w90 Royal purple gear oil 40.00 bucks ( wasnt going to pay 40 a qt from the dealer)

700.00 bucks for the dealer to swap the gears out. He even offered a cheaper alternative by letting a tech do it at home but told him then I would loose the warranty.

Do your homework make sure the dealer has capability to do the job and that they understand the speedo recal.

Another tech even said that the differentials aren't all that great in our cars and I said "thats what everyone is saying on the foums" and he said "people on the forums don't know shit anyway" he then asked why I was doing the gear swap so I told him that "I wanted a little more pep in acceleration" and he said "why its just a Camaro" so I said "you must be a Mufftang guy and he said I'm into vettes" he also didnt know the difference between the SS axle and 1LE axle.
