Those who view these assistance system as self-driving and get lazy....those are the statistics you are reading about. I put over 9500 miles on a "Super Cruise" Demo. was not sure if I would really "want" it. Heck my Camaro is a manual as I like to drive. However, I learned when driving from A to B down an interstate I really became accustomed to letting the car do most of the work for me. Traffic was a lot less stressful as well. Just something you have to experience and not something you can learn to truly enjoy the first time you are in one and not accustomed to it. A true "Self Driving" car sold to the public is a long way off in my opinion. Think about it, the manufacturer of said vehicle would be taking on the responsibility of the passengers safety.

The infrastructure issue becomes much easier to tackle as you just need to put one every couple hundred miles at a truck stop. There is tons of space to put the fuel tanks. The weight of the system should be comparable to that of a diesel powertrain (vs an electric semi that would be almost entirely battery to go any distance). Since fuel cells are electric drive you get the low rpm torque that a huge heavy truck needs. And as an added bonus, there is no need for an APU to power things while the truck is stopped. Its as close to an ideal pairing as I can think of.
