Looking to Buy an SS for my Mom. Good Deal?
Hey guys,
As the description says, in the process of finding an SS for my mom. My father is looking to make it happen before christmas. We found one local to us. Its a 2015 1SS RS M6 in yellow. Only problem with the car is the drivetrain slack, at slow speeds you can tap the gas to get the car to rock and here the clunking of the drieshaft back and forth. Here's the link to the car, let me know what you think. Too much money for a 1SS? And Yes I know the Gen6 is out, but both my father and I find it ugly. http://www.rjchevrolet.com/VehicleDe...-NY/2518045043

Not bad... if you like it, get it and have them repair the 'clunk' with the warranty. Because its clunking, maybe they'll discount you more too so try that. Don't mention that you're going to bug the crap out of them to fix the clunk once you get it.

That clunk is never going to go away. My 14 1LE had it. All the manual cars have it. Totally normal. You will learn to drive it so that it doesn't happen very often.
All the best, Jared Royce |

My 2011 2SS M6 doesn't clunk, unless you push the clutch in when going from reverse to drive.

He pointed out that the giubo couplings on each end of the driveshaft are designed to absorb a lot of energy when loaded - like storing energy in a rubber band, they are huge rubber pucks: When the energy is suddenly released (during manual shift) the giudo causes the driveshaft to rotate quickly and slight play in the transmission gears causes a clank (Tremec TR6060 in the case of SS). I've read that the Tremec is designed to have some extra play in the gears due to expansion when heated and for high speed use. We rocked the tire back and forth sharply, quickly changing direction when the car was on the lift, and sure enough could hear a clank from within the transmission. Listened to all points from the differential forward and the only location I could hear noise was in transmission. And no noticeable extra play at other points. He even checked torque specs on bolts and made sure transmission fluid was at correct level. After a month of driving I re-learned how to load/unload the drive train while shifting and what rpm's are best to mostly eliminate the noise. This is the toughest transmission/driveline to shift out of any manual I've owned. Most shifts in everyday driving I can now do without noise. Due to high HP these energy absorbing giubo couplings are used to help absorb shock and keep things from breaking versus using a plain universal joint. There are many threads in this forum covering this topic. Ron |

So for some maybe its not as 'pronounced', then... again, I don't notice any clunk when shifting.

The clunk OP is referring to happens whenever you decide to let the RPMs go almost under idle. Can easily happen if youre trying to accelerate without using throttle, but slowly letting go of the clutch. I wouldnt call it driveline play, but more of engine bogging from not enough throttle
OP you can get that 1SS for a grand or two less. 29500 out the door is what i would shoot for |

My 15SS only has the clunk if the speed is too slow when shifting.

Hey guys, a little update, made the deal with a totally different dealer last night, comparable cars but this one has the Indy stripes and the NPP exhaust and a moon roof. Talked them downto what the other dealer was asking so picked the car up for $30,500
