Pretty sure there is consent. The real issue to me is that they aren’t transparent about what it means to opt in or opt out. For example is it buried somewhere that you are in unless you specifically do something to opt out? But pretty sure they aren’t selling data without consent.

I know when I worked there I couldn’t get data unless the customer and location was stripped off and even then it was an act of god. And my job was managing customer usage data lol.

Lee Walton, head of JLR's Vehicle Theft Reduction Group, told us that the next step for thieves was to utilise automotive locksmith equipment, enabling them to programme keys to vehicles. By plugging a device into a car’s diagnostic port, a key can be programmed in a matter of seconds allowing the car to be taken. This type of theft is commonly known as a ‘BCM hack’. The only hurdle for criminals being that the car must be unlocked.

More high-tech equipment was therefore required. A signal jammer is commonly used, preventing owners from being able to lock their vehicle. Walton told us that these are regularly used in car parks or petrol stations. Once the owner leaves the vehicle, thieves are able to jump in and take it.

For vehicles that are locked, a more invasive method is used. Crime gangs worked out that they could trigger a vehicle’s locking system by intercepting the on-board computer wires and sending fake messages. This type of attack requires highly sophisticated knowledge of a vehicle’s electrical architecture. The equipment costs upwards of £25,000. Depending on the vehicle, these wires are usually accessed by cutting holes in either the front wing or bootlid.

JLR has been rapidly working on software updates to prevent these attack methods. Vehicles dating back to 2016 will be eligible for free updates, with rollouts taking place now. The software update prevents keys being programmed by the BCM hack method and also stops external devices from being able to send commands to the car’s computer system.

JLR insurance in UK is getting so high (due to theft / vandalism) that it's causing value of cars to PLUMMET and cars becoming uninsurable.

But I believe the fix for this would require you to go to a GM dealer if you ever needed a replacement key programmed for the car? Can anyone predict the thread on why GM dealers charge $600 plus for a new key?

And the article does touch on the lack of law enforcement and the difficulty in getting prosecution as GTA. It’s easy, the punishment is minimal and it’s mostly upside for criminals. None of hat is GMs fault.

I would gladly go to the dealer, if I ever needed a replacement key programmed for the car. I've owned vehicles since 1974 and have never had to do it yet though. Even if cost $600, it's less than a minor insurance deductible. When the car is worth $40+ grand!

This is a GM problem that needs fixing Now. Hell, I got AOL email demanding two-step verification just to use E mail now. GM like most companies are selling technology. It's time they start acting like it and they need a security fix for their customers.

If you are a 6th Gen. Camaro owner, you need to do this today.
Call GM customer service and demand an security Update 1-800 222-1020. Just like JLR did for it customers for new and older vehicles. I have. If they get enough complaints that might just help us out. Even with thousands spent on security prevention we get broken windows due to this issue being know via tiktok.

I made a parts list in the DIY section. You would only need a couple of positaps, a dummy OBD with the correct clip profile, and the 10k resistors (optional) to do what you're describing.

1. Don’t loose your keys!
2. Camaros aren’t “cheap” cars, so parts should not be expected to be cheap if you can afford one…. Which leads me to
3. Ever price check a new transponder from Mercedes? Your eyes will water. So if it’s $600 for a Camaro that’s not so bad.

There’s plenty of F-Body Camaros out there if you want a Camaro but are worried about the price of a key
