Onstar strikes again

Got my 2023 in October of last year, it came with a bunch of free trials like Onstar, XM, unlimited Data and app remote features. I hit the Onstar button when I got the car and set everything up including giving my CC number to the "adviser".

After a few months of not using anything for Onstar and seeing how easily thieves disable it when stealing cars I chose to dump it when the trial ran out, because I got 1 free month then there were extensions added on with the app I lost track of when exactly that would happen but the App said charges started
Feb 23 so on monday the 18th on the drive home I called and canceled, even had the whole "legal" spheel on how im opting out of saftey features.

3 days later (21st) I get a charge on my card for Onstar, check the app and it's showing I still have Onstar preferred setup with reoccurring charges. I call and I'm told the trials ran out on January 23 and that's when the billing started then on February 23 I'd be actually charged for services rendered in the previous month. Took 3 people to get it fully canceled and a request for refund to be accepted (still not sure it will be approved, that's a fight for next week).

Wish I'd refused to give my CC to the advisor to begin with.

This should be a sticky... do not ever give your credit card info to OnStar.

They know you don't want to and try everything in their script when you or the sales rep makes the sign-up call during delivery, but stand your ground and they will still activate the trial.

OP, I hope this will be the end of the story for you

So glad I told my salesman to not even activate Onstar. But this sounds like the exact same ordeal I went through every time I canceled Sirius XM radio. Another service I will never subscribe to again.

It wasn't like this ~10 years ago. Canceling was easier. You couldn't do it online, you had to call, but a quick call solved it all.

Now there's staggered subscription dates and different plans being charged for, and they try to tell you can't cancel until the trial period is over. Sticky and tricky little bastards. That whole model is garbage.

We still can't cancel online, when I tried through my account it took me to an FAQ and the answer was "To cancel these services for your vehicle, please contact OnStar at 1-888-466-7827 and follow the appropriate prompts."

As for 10+ years ago, I agree, both on my 10 Camaro and my wives 11 Cruze I don't remember this bait and switch with the end dates nor being "required" to give them a CC.

Been a subscriber of OnStar and XM from their onset. Find both valuable BUT we’ve never given them a credit card number EVER. Even when we leased and bought our last 2 cars we got the “they’ll extend your free trial 6 months if YOU WILL JUST GIVE THEM A CC NUMBER”.

Don’t do it!

Two wrongs don’t make a right…

Agreed on the phone point, totally valid. But a different discussion. Since this is a Camaro forum, it’s valid to address the Camaro aspect of “privacy”… or lack thereof lol…

As far as I'm aware, my phone isn't reporting to my insurance company how fast I drive, how hard I brake, etc. Unlike Onstar.

I went through the same thing when I cancelled my subscription. It was bad enough I was considering cancelling the CC when I was finally able to get them to stop charging me. This was my first experience with On Star and I will never make that mistake again.

How are you an onstar subscriber without giving them a CC?
