Unfortunately that is the case. Most people out there are either under the influence of the 80's when American cars weren't that great, or they are being told by those people: "oh this car will hold its value better, or oh this will keep my daughter safer...etc.". I was just told last week by some 45 year old woman that I work with that she's going to buy her daughter a Toyota because the airbags are better and will keep her safer. My good friends bought their new Toyota ONLY "because it holds it's value better" (they hit a deer with the last Toyota they had, I'm sure the impound said, "A Toyota, well, that's a different story here's 1000 more dollars")
To top my story off - My own Mother believes that ALL American automakers will be Dead within 20 years. (sigh) I don't know why people would want to believe that foreign cars are higher in quality than ours, I don't think I ever will . Don't get me wrong though, if a Toyota feeds your needs then by all means get one, but not because it's "airbags are better"....:o I am a perfect example of the Camaro Ethnicity debate. I am 50% Italian Stallion, and 50% mutt. I ignore the "mutt" part, and tell everyone who asks that I'm Italian. I was also born in a different state, but I consider myself a New York-er. The Camaro will be roughly 74% American parts, and will be "born" in Canada. I DON'T CARE...this I consider this car to be 100% American, just like I consider myself 100% Italian. |

soooo...the motto should read "buy the Big 3", right?
i had to chuckle to myself when i saw a bumper sticker that read "out of a job yet? keep buying foreign" on a chevy aveo, which is a car made in korea. my wife drove a honda made in ohio. then she laughs at me for obsessing over the camaro which is made in canada and the chassis (i believe) is made by holden, which is austrailan. to tell you the truth, i'm buying an American Icon! as long as it's got the bowtie on it, it's good enough for me! |

Pick up a Sky. Sporty. Performance not too bad for a 4banger, Decent economy. Plus they stopped making them so it'll become collectible.

If you're willing to buy something foreign, my wife bought a 2010 Honda Insight for something like $19900 or so. Since my car doesn't exist, I've been taking to it class every day and averaging about 55-58 MPG highway, 40-45 MPG city. Yes, those figures are correct.

If you want just basic transportation, good deals on Aveo right now.
Otherwise Cobalt and you might be able to squeaze a Cobalt SS for 20K. HHR Malibu, Aura or G6 with the 4 cylinder Probably really good deals on Saturn Astra. A really nice car that just didn't take off in the U.S. but a huge seller in Europe.

Corvette with an LS3 and a manual will net you 28, and I have heard cases in the low 30's.
I guess Cobalt would be the closest thing I would offer ya. Or a VW diesel. |
