NA e85 gains?
I've searched the forum for this, and can't find much about power gains from e85 flex fuel kit and an e85 tune.
I know e85 shines with forced induction applications, but will a naturally aspirated LS3 see any power gains from e85? I'm running vararam intake, ported TB, LT headers, high flow cats, exhaust, and a Dynosteve tune. Thanks! |

Yes. Although e85 has less energy per gallon than gasoline, it’ll make more power because you run a lot more fuel through the engine over the same amount of time.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/E85 However, a dedicated and optimized e85 engine can take advantage of the much higher anti-nock (octane) of e85 by using much higher compression or manifold pressure (supercharged) and make even more power.

For the average build mild gain, not that adaptable to say cross country trips unless flex fuel enables it and of course has to be addressed in the tune, since burning more fuel you can get more moisture in the crankcase /blow by a little I imagine as in diesels... And out here you would have to go way out of your way to get e-85 at anywhere ..lol, but places with racing gas close to me 2...... You can read in old threads if want about those who do use the corn and what they get for gain. Myself I would want to not use it for a daily driver as much due to having to get ethanol. And then it would be more of well if I have that annoying going on I might as well blow it plumb it, put some wheelie bars on it and a chute....LOL

Not worth the money for most people in N/A applications. A flexfuel kit, bigger pump and injectors is a large investment for most.

I had planned on getting the dsx flex fuel sensor and lsa injectors this winter, I just spoke to my tuner last week, he said I would see little to no gain going to e85 on n/a. Worse gas mileage and it will be temperamental when it's cold... I'm not going to do it...

You have to take into account that it's going to use 30% more fuel. That's more trips to the gas station too...
My tuner said if you think your going to save money on gas, or make more power on E85 (n/a)....you will be disappointed.

Im spending around $.50 a gallon more running E85 compared to 93 figured off mileage. My car starts fine in cold weather but not sure on anything below 20*.
It does run smoother on E85 though. I gained 2rwhp lol. You need higher compression than 10.7 to make it shine.

Thanks for the replies, everyone.
Sounds like e85 is not worth the cost until it is ran on a forced induction application. thanks |

10-12 whp peak gain NA maybe, but i think you gain a lot of midrange torque/power. i will be doing it: going to 65 lb injectors and a ZL1 fuel pump if needed. Staying NA though, so no need to get crazy with huge injectors or fuel pumps.

Im running CTSV pumps and injectors. Im at 66% DC on pump and 94% on E85.

are you running a BAP? I was thinking those components could handle more than a heads/cam set up. but you are running a TH400 so the power level is a little different than what a dyno says

No BAP. Bone stock ZL1s and CTSVs cant go E85 because of the DC.
