My E85 conversion review

Started this project over 6 months ago. I only considered doing the conversion because I already had my pump upgraded when it was supercharged and had the bigger injectors. If I hadnt already had those I would never even think of doing it. Since its n/a now I figured about 10rwhp would be all I would gain but since all I needed to complete a conversion was a flexfuel sensor and a pigtain to wire up it would be an easy 10.
To start my SS now is a sbe heads and cam LS3 with a th400 swap. Fun street car that I daily. I made 420rwhp through a 10" 4500 stall back in January. Since then I had swapped the 10" for an 8" 5000 stall. Made it back to the dyno last night finally. Swapped the injectors out to the CTSV ones I had, rescaled the tune and strapped it down to the rollers. First pull I made 416rwhp which is real close to what I made before but this time Im rich. Figured since the 8" stall is loading the engine differently it explained it some. Leaned the tune out to where it was before on a/f and get 21rwhp gain to 437rwhp. Played with the tune tweaking it here and there it didnt change really. Every pull was 437ish. Very very consistent. Figured now we have it dialed in on 93 its time to swap the fuel out and tune it again. Got the E85 swapped in and went back at it. Right off the bat the timing was moved from 27* to 31* and it made 439. Was a little rich so leaned it out some. 439 again. Added another degree and made 439 lol. Had a touch of KR up top so it was moved back to 31*.
So I gained a wopping 2.5 rwhp or so from pump to E85. Another test I did was mileage. I live about an hour from the dyno so I checked my mileage. 15.8mpg
Leaving the dyno I cleared it and checked it when I got to my exit. 11.8mpg.
I figured I was going to lose some since the CTSV injectors duty cycle on pump was 66% and 94% on E85.

Damn all that PITA for 2.5 HP.... I know its a must for real high HP for cooling but yup glad I don't run the Corn...LOL Good Write up....Hope your coming back from the dark side to gain mileage unless your building for something else....I dont have the kind of money to play around with that stuff right now, and does not exist around here for e-85 to even attempt just to get a PITA finding it. Hopefully it will show some results to some who think it is all that when really its best mixed in and good for HIGHER compressions most don't use on the street......as IN all out..... Have a great day gotta run......

It will do better in the heat of the summer. For one I dont have enough compression to really make E85 shine on an N/A build. 10.7:1 isnt gonna cut it.

Yup you thinking of going boost again? Someday maybe I will but its got to be with some small bore ls7 heads as I am at 11:1 now and want to drop a little and a larger chamber may get me there more able to boost and use the flow also but that's years down the road...paying off the Daughters Neuroscience degree has taken a hit on me and my wife and will for a few years now....LOL

You go to flex fuel to be street and strip in the summer the twisty turnies? That's the deal for a daily driver IMO... to be able to switch back sane for road trips...

I Just got some new rear tires today myself they seem to last only about 12-15 for me due to torque and I want to survive the winter....hyroplaning knows no friends....You must be friends with the shop to dyno so much or work there...LOL And your stall so high not the most street friendly but I am sure the cams curve likes it.....I wish I could do more and will some day, I was just admiring some of the wraps on the SEMA cars...LOL And a fat fender zl1 blocked by two gals in the pic...LOL

Maybe Phastek has some pics... like last year.

I’ve heard it’s a bit of an urban myth but does your car drive smoother on E-85? I’m living in KY now so E-85 is everywhere. I know it doesn’t dramatically increase hp and tq N/A but all I need it the flex sensor to switch and I’m already going in for a retune later this month....

Mine runs much smoother on E85.

I'd like to know if race gas would give the same results...

Octane is about the same...

I will vouch for that compared to E85.

Though your numbers weren't initially impressive, I think I'll still get the sensor and lsa injectors this winter...getting the tb and heads ported this winter...have it tuned in the spring.
