OT but for those who ride and for those who don't, very sad
if you dont ride, please watch out for those of us who do...
if you do ride, remember when you are at a light... ALWAYS have the bike in gear, ALWAYS have it angled to the side of the car in front, and ALWAYS ALWAYS watch your mirrors... if you hear or see anything pull up next to the car in front, just let out the clutch and go - this CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE. no idea how many times i have been almost hit, but i ALWAYS follow these steps at every light until at least 2 cars stop behind me... if you dont know why i am postin this, watch this vid of what happened today in phoenix. my heart goes out to all involved! http://www.clipsyndicate.com/video/p...pt=8&wpid=1277 |

Read that earlier today. I was planning on buying a bike this summer, but decided against it after know 2 riders who have gotten into accidents because the semi didn't pay attention or didn't see them. And now this has just made my mind up against buying a bike.
Jalopnik was reporting this morning, that the truck driver apparently commented that he was "fishing for papers" when he ran into the bikes.

hey dont let the frear of dieing keep you from living! if yu want a bike, get one. use your head and take the safety course, if its a sportbike, take a race course and do some track days - you will learn A LOT!!! also always wear gear, YES even on days when its 100 out... you think a leather suit feels hot when its 100?? ok, but i guarantee having your raw skin thats roadrashed scrubbed with steel wool at the hosp will be far more uncomfortable. gear doesnt do any good sitting in a closet!
i ride, i raced for years, seen people seriously hurt, friends who died, friends lost legs etc. i still ride because its part of me. but my head is on a swivel on the street. truely the track is a safer place. but it costs $$,lol. |

safety courses would have been worthless in this incident. I love bikes, have been riding since I was a very young kid. In high school had a 650 yamaha street bike and it was great around the country. But once I went to college in LA I only rode it for a year before I learned it was just too dangerous around LA. Far too many near misses where somebody simply doesn't see you. I got rid of it. I would only have one again if I had a trailer to take it out to the country for a nice drive. Sure there are no guarantees in life but around LA freeways and streets the risk / reward just doesn't seem worth it.

My 2 friends were sideswipped by 2 semi's, whose drivers didn't see them. Both survived but the one driver never stopped and prolly never knew he hit someone, the second one did but my friend slid about 50 yds away from the site of the collision, so it took a while for them to find him. I am not afraid of riding, I am afraid of the idiots who have licenses on the road. Only this morning some dumbass with a Prius, ran a stop sign at a 4 way stop sign intersection, and almost t-boned me. Only reason it didn't happen was I saw him run it, and I stopped even thought it was my turn to go.

Lane sharing, IMO, helps when you're sitting at a light. I always keep my bike in gear, lane share, and am ready to roll! Very sad...what an idiot truck driver ;(

oh i didnt mean to insinuate that these guys did anything wrong, or that a course would have helped etc. all i did was mention those things to help minimize your chances of getting hurt if you ride. i realize there was nothing that could be done in this case. very sad.

Yeah, I read about this tragedy and watched the video, very sad. I ride on a regular basis, I LOVE riding and it's a big part of my life. I actually pulled the bike out today and went for a ride cause I haven't rode the bike since I bought my new Camaro...LOL (2 weeks) and thats VERY unusual. Even though riding a motorcycle can be dangerous (not because of the motorcycle but because of the idiots on the road) I have no plans on quiting riding. I hope to have a bike until i just get too old to handle one and who knows, maybe then i might even switch to a trike.
for those of you that are saying you won't buy one cause of the danger, it's just a matter of paying attention to whats going on around you at all times. I know in this case it might not of made a difference but then again maybe it could have. If one of them had been watching their mirrors they MIGHT have possibly been able to warn the others to get out of the way. But, like the original poster said, please keep an eye out for motorcycles and especially don't tailgate a bike. You might not think it's a big deal but when your rolling down the road at 50, 60 or 70MPH and someones on your ass its a pretty uncomfortable feeling. Cause you know that if something happens and you go down that asshole behind you isn't going to be able to stop in time and is going to run you over.

There are many of US victims- I just somehow was lucky to live. But I still ride. Just took about 5 months off while learning to walk again (With the help of a new titanium leg).
Shit happens too often. Ride safe.

I have been riding for years and this just makes me mad and sad at the same time. My thoughts are with those impacted by this travesty. :(
