2009 Camaro / C5 Corvette performance comparison
Hi,
Do you think the 2009 Camaro will out perform the 1997 -2004 base corvette? Top speed : 175 mph(coupe), 162 mph(convertible) 0-60 mph : 4.9 sec.(manual), 5.3 sec.(auto) 0-¼ mile : 13.6 sec @ 107.3 mph 60-0 braking distance : 125 ft 200 ft skidpad : 0.92 g I am assuming the Camaro will out perform the 2006 GTO. But I am not sure by how much. Specifications for the Pontiac GTO Basic Specs Body style: Coupe Seating capacity: 4 Engine: 6.0L V-8 16 valve OHV SMPI Engine horsepower: 400hp @ 5,200RPM Engine torque: 400 lb.-ft. @ 4,000RPM Transmission: 6 speed manual Drivetrains: rear-wheel Curb weight: 3,725lbs (1,690kg) Miles per gallon (city/hwy): 16/21 Performance Specs 0-60 mph: 5.3 seconds Lateral acceleration (g): .9 Max. towing capacity when properly equipped: 1,000lbs (454kg) Power-to-weight ratio: 9.3 lb/hp I am hoping for 0 to 60 in less than 5 seconds and a skid pad of at least .91 G. But it would be even better of the Camaro out performed a Base C5 Corvette. Mark |

I say no because of weight. I think numbers will be good but that cant have the camaro creeping on the vette IMO

The one BIG spec you did not include about the C5 is the weight. The HP-to-weight ratio between a C5 and the 09 Camaro will likely be very close, so therefore the superior aerodynamics fo the C5 will win. There is no way the Camaro will outperform a C5.

GM should keep them seperate. Of course, someone will build and release a 45K Camaro that will out perform the Vette. That still won't stop the true Vette owner from buying different than his loyal brand. It might change some, but not all. If GM prices them up there to that mark, I'm not buying one....period. You know where they can go. The whole purpose of the Camaro was to compete w/ a Mustang at a reasonable price. If GM goes higher than reasonable...what's the point. There will be a major weight difference. The Vette weighs a buck and a quarter compared to the Camaro. The outcome...better everything. That's the way it goes. They will remain in two different price ranges. They have to.

I think it won't but it might given some engine options and some performance mods. and even if it don't just go and buy some performance mods and pull up beside a vette or GT500 and say laet me show you what you vette or GT500 won't do.

[QUOTE=markhoran;2843]Hi,
Do you think the 2009 Camaro will out perform the 1997 -2004 base corvette? Did anyone besides TAG/Cas pay attention to the question? Yes the new “Top Dog” Camaro is going to out perform the C5 base Vette and a stock C5 Z06. Hell, if the car does weigh in at 3500 lbs or under the base Camaro may out perform a base C5. Its new technology vs. old technology. I keep hearing people say “nothing GM makes can out performer the "Flagship Vette”. BIG TIME BS… In almost every decade there has been one if not more than one car that could out performer the Vette in specific areas. I think most people forget about the 80’s Buick Grand National and Pontiac Firebird GTA with there Turbocharged V6 that could run 12’s off the showroom floor. Oh, and lets not forget about the Cyclone and Typhoon of the 90’s. All these examples were dubbed “Corvette Killer”… As for aerodynamics, you might be surprised that the new Camaro may have better aerodynamics than the C5. If I am not mistaken the 3rd Gen Camaro had better aerodynamics that th 4th Gen in wind tunnel tests. Last edited by KILLER74Z28; 11-06-2006 at 02:18 PM. |

If we assume the "Top Model" will be the 450HP 6.2L then weighing in at 3600 lbs then that would be an even 8lbs/HP. By comparison, a C5 Hardtop (the lightest of the 3 options) weighed in at 3173 lbs with the 345HP 5.7L. That equals a 9.19Lb/HP. The new Camaro has a clear advantage here, and I do not think (Yes, contraditory to my previous post) aerodynamics would even up a 1.19lb/HP gap |

i think its going to outperform the old vette. sure. bythe time it comes out , like the other post said, they will have a new 6.2 motor out and probably push about 450 hp. the only advantage the vettes ever had over the camaro in the last years was that the vette was lighter. other than that the motor was the same. when they rated the vettes power they down graded the camaro to make the vette look like it had more power when they actually had the same( from the motor) now as far as power transfer to the wheels the vette might have gotten more power to the road due to shorter transfer ( driveshaft) and it could plant the power better having bigger tires. but im sure the new camaro will be able to take a stock c5 but thats not what i would want out of my camaro. i want to be able to take beefed up z06's.

I agree w/blac I want to be able to say let me show you what your Viper, Corvette, and GT500 ain't got. And then suck them through the airbox and spit them out of the tailpipes.
