LS3 With No Catch Can - Long-term Results

Does anyone have the LS3 with no catch can that has higher mileage? Have you checked the intake to see if there is any build-up of gunk?

I'm asking because I have a 15 1le and I just want to keep it as stock as possible. Curious to know if frequent oil changes etc may kill the need got the catch can...

If a catch can was needed they would have came that way from the factory

I don't believe that one bit. Why does Chevron and Shell sell gasoline with detergents?

Have you seen the junk that comes out of one?

Don't need one but for the cost it wouldn't hurt. I'm not going to bother.

A friend had one came stock with the 2013 1le (part number turns this up) http://paceperformance.com/i-1080525...ve-system.html
But was in the truck. Dealer stated not use it on the street.
Just on the track

On the other hand I'm running a ls3 with a supercharger and no oil any wares but in the oil pan..
Every oil change is at the line as it was with a fresh oil change..
I change mine when the computer says it's half life (50 percent left)

I agree with this, that's why Engineers make the big bucks, if the L3 needed one, it would have come from factory

I understand what you're saying, but there are other individuals that have a say in the final product other than engineers, so it's possible that the engineers feel that maybe one is in fact needed, but there's also the issue of what happens if you forget to clean it out, etc.

Btw, my 1le did come with a box that has an oil separator in it that can be installed at some point.

Just wondering to see if someone has actually put it top the test and analyzed the condition of the motor

Mine came with one from the factory! There is a reason for them. I have an RX catch can and actually ran both, my RX and the factory one. 24/7. I ended up throwing a CEL, it turned out the factory one was sucking air and throwing the computer off because i had a leak at a connection. I now will only run the factory one when i track it. The RX will remain just as it is. There is still oil blow bye, that i empty from the catch can just driving on the street, so do what you will from real world experience.

Engineers make the big bucks but are restricted most of the time from the number crunchers (who probably make bigger bucks).

Why else would GM be recalling almost 30 millions cars because of an ignition problem they knew about over 10 years ago, that some engineer probably warned them about from the beginning.

I believe your right. Money crunchers vs. engineers, it's always a battle. Plus I agree most people would probably never empty it, just like the oil they neglect for thousands of miles.

If they got it right so often, why are there recalls and enough warranty claims to be half of my shop's hours?

I've personally dealt with countless direct injection engines from GM and other manufacturers where we had to take it apart to remove the deposits on the backs of the valves. I had a 3.6 Equinox apart with 80K on it and the buildup was staggering... and it had scheduled maintenance.

^^

This. I don't understand how the logic demonstrated in some of the above posts manages to perpetuate itself. In what world do you think that the engineers make the final calls as to what goes into a product for mass, manufactured production?

The bean counters determine that. In the 1LE, it's standard equipment and the engine is a *gasp*, LS3. Corners are cut on almost every major component of the vehicle for the sake of cost vs safety vs longevity vs performance.

The catch can is a simple, yet effective design. If you're having trouble justifying its use and purpose, I highly encourage you to research it rather than snub it.
