Dealer crossthreaded my drain plug on a "free" oil change on a brand new truck, that was the last dealer oil change that I had. Plus I don't want them driving anything I own, too picky.

There are quite a few cases of V6 motors consuming tons of oil. Look around the forum and you'll see others who were not aware that the motor ate up most/all of the oil and then exploded.

This issue isn't new and GM is very much aware of the oil consumption problem on the V6 motor.

i just checked mine. little over 3000 miles and the oil is right in the middle of the top and bottom hash marks, has not moved since I got it in July with 100 miles on it.. Looks pretty clean too vs my wifes car with 65,000 on it.

Very unfortunate either way... very sorry. Nobody needs this and oil should not suddenly "disappear" but watching is good to do to prevent things like this. Hope it works out.

Unless the dealer actually found a low oil condition, he doesn't have any proof, either.

So then it becomes as issue of whether the dealer is a jerk.

So, was the oil low when the dealer for the car for repair?

I am amazed at the stupidity of some people who believe they have zero responsibility for maintaining their vehicle.....but expect GM to be 100% responsible for their ignorance. What the hell happened to our society?! Have we really become that soft?! Have we really become a bunch of mindless drones!?

Some things I learned about VVT V6 engines from owning a 2006 Cadillac STS. I understand this is a different engine, but I think much still applies.

The VVT system has a tendency to use oil, especially during the later periods of the oil life cycle.

The oil life monitor should be completely ignored. It will allow for about 10K miles on a single oil fill. By that time the oil will be dangerously broken down or degraded if you will. Should change at 5000 miles or so.

The PVC system has a tendency to clog. This will increase pressure in the top end, heads. When this happens, oil will slip past the o rings in the valve covers where the coil pack and spark plug reside.

Of course the direct injection engines also add the inherent issue with carbon build up on the intake valves. This then leads to the intake valves not operating properly, premature wear on valve stems and seals, which will also increase oil consumption. After enough time, these deposits, now hard baked, can chip off, go into the cylinder and cut the walls and damage the piston rings, more oil consumption.

so, as you can see, with all of these things working against the oiling system in the engine, and considering the vital role oil plays, constant monitoring is an absolute must, not just a good idea.

*All of the above information was garnered from my brother who works on these things for a living.

ALL GM requires is receipts that say you purchased a reasonable amount of oil and filters to change the oil at regular intervals or when the oil monitor would have told you too. Unless you had all oil changes done at the dealership they could tell you they dont believe you. They dont do that. Even if bought in bulk. Now dont expect them to be ok if you bought that oil 5 years ago but as long as you bought enough oil to have changed it every whatever the monitor says to or so your good. If you tell them you never check the oil level they can use that to void it.

There's a better chance of something being covered with oil change records than by just saying, "yeah I pulled the dip stick to check the oil every time I filled up." right? How can anyone even prove something like that? I check mine regularly as well but I need something I can show if something happens. Someone's word that they did something is crap today

Doesn't the AFM on the V8 cause lots of oil to be used as well?

The V8 does not burn oil like the V6. This is really a V6 issue and a known issue.

I change the oil in my SS every 4K miles and lose virtually no oil in that time.

I think the point some of us are trying to make is.....a lot of these issuse can be avoided by simply checking your fluid levels regularly. I agree good documentation can save you in the long run....but i would much rather be driving my car than have it layed up in a shop for weeks....especially if i knew a simple dip stick check could have avoided it.
