9.8 Quarts of oil not 10?
I just got my last free oil change and the dealer let me upgrade to the 0w 40 ESP Mobil 1 for a small fee.
The tech said the computer had him put in 9.8 quarts not 10. He did give me the rest of the last bottle. I know this isn't much difference, but I thought it was supposed to be 10 quarts even. Has anyone else heard that 9.8 quarts fills the 2017 ZL1? |

I have a 2017 ZL1 and the manual says 10 quarts and my 2016 SS also took 10 quarts with a filter change!

The capacity of the oil in the car has nothing to do with how much you should put in. Because you never know how much is left in there even if you let it drain for an hour or so. Several ounces are stuck to the sides and on other components. Find out what the capacity is in the owners manual, put in 90% of that amount. And then start putting in 2ounces at a time until you are mid stick.

I used 10.5 in mine and that was after I let in drain for well over 30 mins.

That’s good they only put in 9.8 qts. I’d rather have them under fill it than over fill it.

I go by what the owners manual states and haven’t had any problems yet!

Does the ZL1 not call for 11 quarts?

I would just check one morning before starting and see if it shows full on the dip stick. Two tenths of a quart is not going to matter one way or the other if it was a 10 quart system. However, the LT4 show that is has a 11qt. system.. Again, just check it when it has had time to properly drain back to oil pan and see if you need to add that last bit of oil and if you need to add another quart based off the manual. PS: What was the difference in price if you don't mind being asked?

11 quarts is the coolant capacity, not the oil. The LT4 oil capacity is 10 quarts.
I'm pretty sure it makes no difference if you have 9.8 quarts, 10 quarts, or even 11 quarts of oil. However, I'd recommend if you track your car, a little extra is better/safer. The last thing you want is to starve the system for oil while taking a hard corner (It happens, especially with sticky tires.) If absolute precision were required with respect to oil capacity, GM would engineer a better solution than the dipstick that's nearly impossible to read with clean oil.
