Is this much exhaust soot normal???

My dad said my car is "running rich" by the way my exhaust looks.. can anybody explain or elaborate on this please
Is this a problem? Or totally normal?

EDIT: currently have a MRT v2 exhaust installed. Automatic v6

Looking at your post history, you've been complaining about low MPG as well as it looks like you do a lot of city driving.

I would say the car is definitely running rich, but how often do you clean the exhaust tips before they look like that again?

Looking at your exhaust, that is not normal & I'd have to agree with your dad & Chibi.

Damn, that's RICH! Get a better air filter or CAI that might help, but better yet get a tune.

I have this same level of soot on my DynoSteve tuned L99.

I emailed him shortly after the tune explaining that I was concerned it was running rich. He told me it was impossible, as that the way he runs his tune, these cars are all dialed in. I asked if we could Datalog it, but he declined....

This is what I never understood from custom canned tunes. Each car is different and every single mod can alter the base tune, although I do know the car has a learn factor.

I have an SCT X4 and Livelink software installed, can easily datalog, but I really don't know what I am looking for with my Short/Long Term Fuel Trims to see if it really is off from optimal or not.

Does it give you numbers in the +/- 25 range?

Make sure the car is staying within +/- 5. So if you see anything richer than -5 in the LTFT, then it's running too rich. Positive numbers are leaning out.

This is how I log with HPTuners to see if I'm running too rich or not.

Def looks rich. Can bad cats not burning excess fuel do this? I don't think he said (2010 Camaro) but a V8 will crud the tips in pretty short order on city runs.

My tips look like that, but I know my car does run rich. But the LLT is hard to tune, there only a few companies that do it.

My L99 would be covered in soot about 50 miles after cleaning, started after a mail order tune. After some mods I had it dyno tune with a wide band sniffer in the tail pipe to dial in A/F ratio, and no more soot. If you haven't checked your air filter, you should to make sure shes breathing OK. But it could be the tune...

I think it's normal . I cleaned mine a couple of weeks ago and within 2 days it looked like I hadn't even cleaned them .

Y'all gotta quit burning that pine and alder. Some good oak is best. I find the walnut a little cold, hard to burn and dirty too. Really crusts up the tips. I heard some people over on a car forum had this problem as well. Anyway, always glad to contribute to the Fireplace5 blog.

Smoke em if ya got em!

Mine is that dirty, was that filthy with the stock tune and manifold

Can't tell if got any dirtier after going catless headers and a tune. I wouldn't be too concerned, I ring my out often too so I'm blowing all that bad stuff out
