Exclamation rock + windshield = NIGHTMARE!

Hey peeps....

well, it finally happend.... it was a beautiful day, dropped the windows... had the sunroof open... blasting some red hot chilli peppers when ... boom.
I was behind a jeep and a rock flew out from under his tire and SMACK.. BANG... hit my windshield. Right in frount of the steering wheel.

now there is a big chip there! (thank god not a big crack, but its annoying as....****)

so were my options:

1- there is a place that repairs cracks and chips and fills it with some kind of glassy adhesive substance

2- insurance said they would "possibly" replace the windshield if i went thru the madenss of paper wk.... which would have been hectic.

I ended up going with option 1, as i thought replacing the windshield for a small chip was friverless and lord knows what would happen if i got another one... i cant replace it each time it would happen!

They "repaird it" it looks 70% better but has left an annoying "dot" (for lack of better term) but its right in my gaze above my steering wheel at possibly the worse place possible!

Any ideas or tips how to make rock chips less noticable or how to treat this?

thanks everyone...

Think of the "dot" as permanent insect splatter. If you think it is a safety problem, I would replace the windshield. Give it some time though as you become used to the defect it will become less noticeable. Cost and logistics of shipping a new windshield to Qatar will be expensive.

Same here..

Sorry to hear. Same thing happened to me the second week I had my car. I had the chip repaired as well. I have since lowered my insurance deductible to $0 for about $30 more every 6 months. If the windshield starts to crack, or something happens with it in the future, I will get factory replacement windshield. Sometimes avoiding gravel trucks is not enough....random things happen. A 93 Pontiac Sunfire kicked up the rock that cracked my windshield. I now hate those cars!

i would call around to your local auto glass shops and see what brands they carry.. if they purchase from LOF or Pilkington, they can get your windshield easily... find out what urethane they use as well.. remember, your deductible will remain the same no matter which company you use, and you have the ultimate authority on who to you

edit: to let you know, ive done a couple of the new Camaro windshields, it's not a hard job to do

Been nursing a small crack in my windshield since April and went out Saturday like the Op did and this is what was I saw when I got in. The crack was right at the tint line and then it decided to go south fast. The temp's been dropping during the night and then would warm up. Going to see the glass place tommorow. Lucky I'm in Florida because by law they have to replace it free with no deductible.

If it's bad enough for the deductible, get it replaced. That's what insurance is for. I don't believe your rates will go up on a windshield claim.

Just had our less than a month old windshield repaired this past Friday. It now has two dots right in the driver side. I'm not going to have two permanent bug splats and I'm calling the insurance first thing in the morning to plead a safety hazard and pay my $50 deductible. It more the matter of it being there and it being brand new really but I've paid for years with no major claims (knocking on wood)! I sure hope they see it my way.

I had this happen to my POS truck a while back (before I got my Camaro). It was a small chip from a rock and I had it repaired by a local auto glass shop for ~100 bucks. They did a very nice job. It was almost unnoticable.

Since then I've gotten 2 more chips from rocks on the same truck. I haven't even bothered repairing them. If it cracks the whole windshield, i'll get the insurance to replace the windshield. My insurance company will replace the windshield free of charge, regardless of deductable.

The lesson I've learned that I've applied when driving my Camaro.....get in a lane where there are no big trucks or SUV's ahead of you. Those rocks can bounce around for quite a long distance. If not your windshield, it's your paint.

If you see some truck/suv/tractor-trailor pull in to your lane down-road, get in another lane. You'll appreciate it in the long run. Plus, the other thing I learned quickly, you have a Camaro. You should be in the lane that has noone in front of you in the first place just because you have a Camaro and if one of these type of vehicles get in front of you, pass them. It's fun and functional.

del-boy, if it's bothering you have it replaced. I just got off the phone with my ins co and there were no questions. They'll be out to replace it this week. I'll be more than happy to pay my $50 deductible, after all that's what insurance is for.

SC also has a no-deductible on safety glass if you carry the comprehensive insurance. I carry it anyway on all the cars as if you pop a deer, it's not collision, it's under comprehensive. Although deer or other animal (and maybe even people you don't like) will cost you the deductible out of pocket.

Sorry to hear that. If it makes you feel any better I chipped my sisters wind shield on her Jeep with my Camaro when she was following me.

My windshield got hit by a rock after I picked up my car from Lingenfelter for the 600 mile trip home. I just told myself that it was because I was going so fast, that the wind did it!!

Windshield replaced the minute I got home. If you have a choice- replace the windshield always. its not that big of a job/deal.
