What’s your reply when people ask “How much horsepower does it have?”

I usually just shrug it off. Curious what others say or do.

I have a few mods, it sounds stronger than it is because of my exhaust setup. With no dyno I usually ballpark and say "about 450hp" most people seem satisfied with that. But since I live next to a high school a lot of them think those are mad numbers and practically crap themselves. It gives me joy seeing their reactions.

I tell them 330, then ask how much they have. they seldom tell me cause they're usually driving a civic or Carola or something.

Tell them what they asked is what I do. They are wanting to know what the crankshaft horsepower is.
The racers want to know rear wheel or dyno horsepower. That makes good sense, but the average person wants to know how it compares to their car's advertised hp or a hellcat or demon.
I consider it a big step up from the days when they would ask how fast does it go, and looked at the speedometer numbers and the highest number was assumed to be the top speed regardless. Or "how fast have you had it up to?".
Don't think hardly any of us have been in a safe place to explore those numbers. I could quote the published top speed but rather not answer the latter question to get the retort "my fartcan car goes faster than that".

I simply tell them it's rated at 580 right from the factory.

Most people who ask don't know the difference. If it's a "car guy", I give them RWHP.
