Sport Mode and 1st gear

I know that when stopped I can select 1st gear in manual (sport) mode with the tap shifter. Ok, now the question. When in 1st gear and ready to launch, how do I get the car to do the shifting instead of using the tap shifters? Or am I stuck with starting in 2nd gear if I want the car to do the shifting?

Im not exactly sure what your trying to do.
When you Put into M mode you get an S in your DIC, which is sport mode. in this mode, the computer is still shifting and down shifting. Its UNTILL you click the LEFT TapShift (to go to first) that you take it out of S mode (sport Mode, computer shifting) and put it into YOUR control of M (then it shows up as M1, M2, M3 etc).

put the shift in sport mode("S") it will shift itself.don't touch the paddles unless you want to shift it yourself.

I want to start in 1st gear and let the tranny shift when it wants to. All I know is that when you use the tap shifter to get to first, then I have to tapshift when I accelerate. Maybe the tranny will shift at redline even in tapshift mode, but I have to grow the balls to try it. I know it will downshift when coming to a stop.

transmission will not shift itself using the tap shift.you can use the tap shift to put it in 1st gear,if you want.if you want it to shift on it's own,put the shift in sport mode.it will be in 1st gear and will do the shifting for you.you will get your fastest times using sport mode.hope this explains it.

The computer will only down shift for you in Manual mode. It will NEVER upshift for you after you get out of S. Only in S mode is the computer still fully in control. Even redlining it will NOTTTTTT up shift so dont try it unless you wanna pay your dealership a visit for a new tranny.

Well, I tried some experiments and I have discovered that when in Sport (S)mode (and no tap shifting), the tranny starts in 1st gear. I counted 5 shifts when accelerating in Sport mode.

Also, while stopped and in Sport mode, I tapped up once, and the DIC said M2, I must have been in 1st gear before tapping. So, If I want to start in 1st gear, just put it in Sport mode and nail the gas...wohoo.

god I love this car.

Lol, you don't have to have it floored to shift. You can top out at 60 or 70 and still count 5 shifts.

This is all good info. I was wondering about this stuff myself. Now I know. Thanks.

A tuner explained Sport mode to me yesterday when he took me for a ride in his Kenne Bell supercharged SS. Sport mode in my car is nice but in the Kenne Bell SS, wow, now that's a whole new level.

Your Camaro will ALWAYS start in 1st gear if the computer is doing the shifting. The ONLY time your car doesn't automatically start you out in 1st gear is when you're using the tap shifts. When using the tap shifts you must tap down to first gear. And as mentioned, you MUST upshift when using the tapshifts. The computer will not make upshifts even if you're redlining the engine.

D (Drive) - Computer does the shifting (1st - 6th gear)
M (Sport) - Computer does the shifting (1st - 6th gear)
M (Manual/tapshift) - you must up shift the car. The computer will only drop you to 2nd gear when you slow down.

If you're using the tap shifts, you can at anytime move the shifter up to D and then back to M to make the computer do the shifting. But as soon as you touch the paddle shifters, you're back in tapshift mode.

Drag racing - let the computer do the shifting (D or M -Sport).
