91 or 93 I see no difference in how the car drives. I do fill up with 93 when I can but don’t worry at all about 91.

Your car is "tuned" in a sense to run on 91. It is tuned to run, potentially, slightly better at 93. No need to retune, it is already part of your "tune."

We only have 91 in the Wichita KS area, no need to re-tune. The sticker on the fuel door even says 91+

How is the ocatane rating calculated in canada? In the us, its an average of ron and mon (road octane number and motor octane number). I saw a video about how its calculated in australia, and their numbers are calculated using only one method. If its not an average of the two in canada, then the advice given wont be accurate. I live in california and use only 91 (highest available). The car isnt happy at times with it, and i cant even imagine putting something lower in. Carrying an octane booster of some sort is annoying, but could be a good safeguard to prevent problems.

An Australian take on octane:

My understanding is that our Canadian west coast chevron 94 Octane is about the equivalent of your American 91 Octane, and that your 93 Octane is much better than our chevron 94, but I’m not sure about our petro canada 94 octane on the east coast.

On your 91 Octane sure, but I’m not sure that’s the case with our 91 Octane in canada, I’ve heard from multiple tuners and car shops around here that ours is substantially inferior to your 91 Octane

Thanks everyone for the info. It's good to know the ZL1 will run fine on 91... maybe not good for my bank account, lol, but good to know.

You do realize you are getting advice from people who live in America talking about American 91 Octane when you live in canada and are asking about Canadian 91 Octane...

Why would they have any idea what the quality of our 91 octane gas is in Canada, why should they??? At least ask a tuner with a good reputation...

I just talked to Ted Jannetty and he said our 91 octane is crap compared to American 91 octane.

Apparently 94 octane from Petro Canada (mostly on the east coast) is better than their 93 octane in America however 94 octane from Chevron in canada on the west coast and in BC is not nearly as good as the aforementioned 94 octane from Petro Canada

Yeah if Canada uses the same formula as Europe, 91 in Canada equals 87 in USA. Not ideal for these cars. So many people around the world don’t know the difference.

Canada uses the same formula as the US.

First off I don’t know why you’d trust Wikipedia, secondly why do Tuners in canada and America say that this is not the case?

You need to think about the source of your information...

In Canada, octane ratings are calculated using an average, sometimes known in shorthand as the Anti-Knock Index, or AKI.

Some foreign vehicle manuals recommend a Research Octane Number (RON) instead
I don't know why people keep insisting that Canada measures octane differently when it's easy to find plenty of sources to put that myth to bed. It's not hard.

From page 34 of the ZL1 high performance supplement manual https://my.chevrolet.com/content/dam...upplement.pdf:

Quote:
"GM recommends the use of TOP
TIER detergent gasoline to keep the
engine cleaner and reduce engine
deposits. See www.toptiergas.com
for a list of TOP TIER detergent
gasoline marketers and applicable
countries.
Do not use any fuel labeled E85 or
FlexFuel. Do not use gasoline with
ethanol levels greater than 15% by
volume.
Use premium unleaded gasoline
meeting ASTM specification D4814
with a posted octane rating of 93.
If unavailable, unleaded gasoline
with a posted octane rating of
91 may be used, but with reduced
performance and fuel economy.
If the octane is less than 91, the
engine could be damaged and the
repairs would not be covered by the
vehicle warranty. If heavy knocking
is heard when using gasoline rated
at 93 octane, the engine needs
service."
