Throwout bearing
Ok new to me..
I have a ‘17 SS, AT with the needed goodies. Last Friday heading home, I got on it a bit in manual mode. Not bad, I’ve been on it much harder. Got to 3rd @ about 3k rpm, and started to hear a rattle from the engine bay. No noise at idle or below 2500 rpm. Got home, popped the hood and had the wife run it up to 3k. Heard the rattle, but could not locate it. Called the dealer and took it in last Monday. They called me Tuesday and told me it was a throwout bearing. What?? In an auto?? Never heard of such a thing. It may have been out there, but i’ve Never heard of it. Anyway, they were waiting on GM to make a decision to rebuild, or replace the engine. Called me today, they are replacing the engine. Problem is, there are none in the system. I have to wait to have one built and shipped. 😭😩. Weeks and weeks I’m sure...... Sucks.....

More likely it has "thrown" a bearing or spun a bearing

Yeah, that service writer must have meant something else. Even if it was a bad throwout bearing, you shouldn't have to replace an engine for that. And like you, I've never heard of a throwout bearing on an auto. Like mentioned above, he probably meant a thrust (main) bearing. Hopefully they get it taken care of quickly for you.

Throw out bearing is an old old slang term for (clutch) realease bearing.

Only 10k miles. Went to the East coast twice this summer.
Dealer said they are replacing engine because being metal bearings, they are afraid fragments might have gone through they fluid system and could cause future problems. Sounds logical. Dealer called last Tuesday and said engine had shipped and they were going to start the tear down on mine. I do agree, I think the service lady mis-spoke with the issue description. I’ll keep you posted. Once back and about 500 miles back on the new engine, I’m going to run the hell out of that car to make sure it’s going to hold up. I told the service it needs to be put back right because it’s going to Mid Ohio race track next spring and I’m not going to baby it. It was built for the track, and I’m going to run it on the track.....

I just had my engine replaced from thrust bearing failure. My dealer tried to replace the crank first then it spun a bearing. At least they are fixing it right for you the first time. I got lucky however, my engine only took 4 days to get.
