Anyone been on the track with a ZL1 1LE?

I hear such much about that car. I want to be on track on a hot day with one and see how the super charger holds up. I still belive that car will over heat. I got my Z28 to hot on a 101 degree day. I jsut had to lighten up for one lap and it cooled right down. No limp mode. Just noticed the gauge was up there.

Im certain that same day running just as hard a ZL1 would have gone into limp mode.

I know they are faster on the Newburgh times but again the Z28 was in the rain. Is the car really faster over 30 min?

Either way I don't want one. I love my car. I turned off all the fancy driver assist this last weekend and shaved 2 seconds off my best lap. This car is a monster with that stuff off.

Plenty of people have run them, and base ZL1. Cars have been fine to my knowledge.

I have read lots of talk... but I have yet to see one or talk to someone who was there to see if they really run the car.

I know two guys with Z06's and 1 will tell you the car is amazing and perfect. Runs flawless while the other one will tell you it sucks it is always over heating on hot days. The later actually drives his car. Way faster then the first guy.

It has 11 (i think) heat exchangers... seems they got the memo. Guys on C6 haven't complained of over heating. One major complaint is how badly it bogs down on launch. Appears GM designed it that way. That alone would prevent me from buying one (not that I'd let go of the Z28...)

http://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=505106. Forgot to mention that its only an issue w/ M6. It may not have been intentionally designed that way... just very hard get right.

From Car and Driver while talking about the M6..... "Does it help that it does 60 mph in first gear? Actually, it doesn’t. That tall first gear makes the ZL1 tough to launch. We got our best times by revving it to a needle’s width above 2000 rpm, releasing the clutch pedal, and quickly rolling into the throttle. Open the throttle too fast and the Goodyear blimps in back light up like the Hindenburg. If you’re too slow on the gas pedal, the engine bogs. This Camaro’s launch control had been disabled, but we regularly beat the system anyway. Like we said: Sad"

I don't think the ZL1 1LE has enough time on it yet. Time will tell. And who knows, maybe all those coolers and exchangers did the trick.

I just tracked my ZL1 1LE at RoadAmerica last weekend.

The car is the real deal. VERY happy with it. Wasn't real warm, ambient air temp of only around 70 both days, but I drove the snot out of it for 30 minute sessions and temps never even reached the middle of the gauge (210degrees).

RA is a big fast track so lots of high RPM runs. I don't think cooling is going to be a problem. Will know more when I run Road Atlanta in the summer. One year the temps in the paddock were > 100 degrees. That will be the real test.

Best RA lap in my Z/28 was a 2:37:00 after I think 5 days of track time with the car. I'm sure I had more time to shave with more experience with the Z/28. Awesome car.

On day two at RA with the ZL1 1LE, and probably the only lap of clear track that I had all weekend (I dropped down to Intermediate Group from Advanced Group to learn the new car), I did a 2:34:40. Was pretty happy with that on the first weekend. My ultimate goal is a 2:29:anything at RA. Going back to RA on 10/14 and 10/15 and will be back in the Advanced Group so will post some PDR video and times from that event.

I absolutely LOVE my Z/28....and I don't ever plan to sell it......bad ass car and a blast to drive.

The ZL1 1LE gave me the extra HP I needed to run with some of the faster cars in the Advanced Group, and, the suspension does feel a bit more nimble in the Gen 6 chassis.

Love them both. Don't anyone ask me to pick my favorite - because it is and always will be a tie.

So did Mr. Wyndham... with no issues all day.

My regular ole Z had no issues with heat soak as well. Also, hot lapped it on the drag strip 4 runs and ran the same times. I think they nailed it for cooling.

Awesome feedback right there. Can't get a better comparison than that.

Thanks for the great insight. 3 seconds is a lot. Am sure the gap will widen as you become more familiar with the 1LE. It is amazing what was accomplished with the zeta platform, but there is no denying that the 1LE is a significant step forward. However, glad to hear that you still enjoy the Z/28 every bit as much as before. Both are great in their own way. Curious about the streetability of the 1LE.... is it noticeably harsher than the Z/28?
