you said it.. high performance.. yet it crapped out before 600 miles? fanboy all you want, but that's pathetic. it's supposed to be built to handle a 7000 rpm redline, therefor it should without issues. especially being brand new.

No entirely true about performance motors just blow and everyone's does. Back when Brad Keselowski won the championship in a Dodge, that year, not one motor failure had taken place all season in all three of NASCAR's top series by anyone running a Dodge motor. That's a tribute to design excellence number one with top engine builders and tuners. When Honda was the only motor used in all indy cars from 2006 to 2010 there was not one motor failure.

Sorry folks, but it can and does happen when a manufacturer wants to. The bean counters are the ones to blame. They hedge reliably again't keeping cost down in the hopes that profit out weighs warranty repairs and unhappy customers. Sometimes they win. Sometimes people get tired of it and switch brands.

Me either...I have built/assembled numerous small blocks (283,350,400) and 1 big block 396. All of them I ran hard from the start. I asked an old mechanic how he broke in an engine and he stated "every engine I broke in hard ran hard". People that baby them are the ones that have oil burners.

Our break-in procedure started on the Dyno. A 5-10 minute warm up from 3-4000 RPM and then set Lash. Make a test pull from 6000-7800 RPM and then let its tongue hang out making pulls from 7400-9800 RPM (300 RPM per second). All with an new Hone job, Rings and running Cams with up to 1.125 inch lift. From there the Motor went into the Car. Burnouts at 7500-8000 RPM, launch 7400 RPM, Shift 10200 RPM and Trap at 10400 RPM.

Only broke 2 motors. 1 A crew member mis-placed a push rod in the rocker when setting lash and another when I lost a transmission going into second gear. Once back to the pit we found a Valve through the head sideways. A little Welding and machining and it was good as new.

500 Inch Olds DRCEII 1400+ HP +/-800 lb-ft with an incredible acceleration rate. Like holding a 5 headed rattle snake with one hand.

I would love to tear into the broken LS7 motor and see what the problem is. Hopefully I'll get some feedback on what happened.

All will be good in the end!!!

I would guess a valve dropped or a rod bolt broke causing the damage

Those are some serious engine pictures you are posting up!

Any videos?

Shit happens, GM is replacing it... Couldn't ask for it to go any better IMHO.

I only have 1 Video online. I have it posted somewhere else on this forum. Yes they were as serious as a heart attack. Still have 1 of these beasts left. Just sold the last Pro Stock Car and a couple of clutches last week. Have a guy coming next week from North Carolina to pick up all the spare Cranks, Heads, Cams and what not still in the shop. Officially retired from drag racing.

My Z28 is back at home running great. The Motor, Intake, Oil System and Exhaust are all new. They replaced everything. They kept me up to speed with the progress and where part were in transit. GM picked up the tab on everything.

The mechanic working on it did an awesome job. You can even tell the motor was pulled. Can't even tell they had the Hood off.

The guys at my Dealership, Polar Chevrolet in White Bear Lake MN rock. Heck when I picked it up they even offered to wash my Dually.

Even if the numbers don't match I am happy!!!

Glad to see GM stood behind their product. I hope GM can provide us with the actual cause.

That's awesome man! Glad they treated you so well and have the car back on the ground running under its own power! Interested to see what the cause was!

Wise decision by GM management, who have to know . . . there are a lot of folks following your story.

Put 110 miles on it last night. Runs like a Swiss Watch...drove it to work this morning too. Seems like it is running better than ever.

Went back to the Dealership yesterday and went over all the parts with the Mechanic. It appears the motor was eating itself (my opinion). But without tearing into the Short Block assembly which I cannot since the Motor has to go back I can only speculate.

The #6 Piston is completely gone a long with the Intake Valve Head. The Valve Stem moves freely. So what I am thinking is as the motor consumed itself metal particles caused a Lifter to stick hanging the intake valve open and wham knocked the head off the Valve breaking the Piston. The Wrist Pin was still in the Rod. I certainly hope we can get some feedback.

Everything from the Air Cleaner to the Cats was replaced. They did not want to take a chance having any stray metal left in any lines or Induction System contaminating the new Engine.

There was never any question or debate from "GM Management" or the Dealership if it was going to be covered. No question what so ever. The Mechanic was in constant contact with GM Tech and they addressed everyone of his concerns without hesitation and sent him whatever he felt necessary to put the Motor back to as original as it could be.

My hat is off to all involved at GM and the Dealership to make my Z whole again.
